It's called a mode of transportation in most nothern European countries, just as the snowshoe is a mode of transportation in the northern parts of North America.

I dunno if anyone knows, for sure, who the first skier was, but the best skier is definately Glen Plake.
If you doubt me, pick up any article on him - he's 40 years old, still wears his 3 foot tall mohawk, is real nice to his fans, and used to be a K2 rep (my fav brand of women's skis). One of my co workers met him and his wife at a show and couldnt stop raving about how he was the most polite pro skier he has ever met (and he has met quite a few).
