One thing that would help enormously would be to have all primary elections held on or near the same day. Many people get turned off when the nomination is decided with the New Hampshire primary and Iowa caucus.

Americans would be more interested and participate more in politics if:
1: The communication laws that Bush Sr did away with concerning broadcasting of governmental issues were brought back. An example of this is that it used to be that even our local news programs were required to spend a % of their time on politics. Bush Sr did away with that.
2. If ppl could have easier access to political news.
3. If participating was made easier. For example, voting 7 days instead of one... or 1 day of the weekday plus the entire weekend.

The best way to become a part of the political system is to always be sure that your thoughts are YOUR thoughts and not those of someone who is trying to influence you.

Don't let someone ( or some organization ) brain-wash you and turn you into a bag of nothing.

If you don't know the answer to some question, find out for yourself. DO YOUR OWN THINKING instead of following like a sheep someone who has enough money to buy and make news.

Only when you are a true YOU can you really help in the political system.

In Australia it is compulsory to vote at council (municipal), state and federal elections. You can if you wish collect your ballet paper and submit it unmarked. Only the act of participation is covered by the law. All persons over 18 are required to register to vote. Penalties apply for non compliance. People ***** and moan but on the whole are proud to have a say in their future.
Polling day is always a Saturday and postal votes are available for those working or travelling.
People vote to make a choice and not because one candidate or the other has woken them from their apathy

Instant Runoff Voting. Instant runoff voting is a voting system where you rank the candidates instead of simply picking one. This would lead to more viable third party candidates and people who don't see much difference between the two dominant parties would be more likely to participate. One of the biggest causes of voter apathy is the feeling that neither of the viable candidates, namely, the Republican or the Democrat, are looking out for their interests. At the same time, people don't want to "waste" their votes. Instant Voter Runoff allows you to vote for the candidate you most want, but not waste your vote.

For example, if you wanted to vote for Nader in 2000 you would put him #1, but you could then put Gore number #2. When they tabulate the votes Nader would get your vote but if he didn't win outright, then your vote would go to Gore. The result of this is that more people might have voted for Nader because they wouldn't have worried that their vote for Nader was a vote for Bush. And more people would have voted in general because all the people who hate both parties would vote for a third party that more reflects their political views without feeling like it was a waste of time.

The American voters should realize that all that happens affects each and everyone of us. It affects not only you, your parents and children. We not only have to vote to even show the Bas Tar Ds we care; but holler and shout by contacting your newspapers call your representatives and telling them what you would like to see happening. Right now I am not to happy about a non binding resolution on the War and I am going to call a bunch of Democrats and ask them when they are goingto decide to take leadership and end the madness. Anyone with me? Give it a shot.

Incentivize the political process. Make it so that it pays off financially to those who participate. I'm sure that this is the very reason that those most involved in the political process have chosen this course.

Americans must vote in every election so that the right candidates will win and not only the influential ones. Voting is an important right because it is the only means that Americans can choose their leader.

There are two kinds of people in life. Those who make excuses and those who make things happen. Who cares if other people want to make excuses and not participate. That just makes my vote count all the much more!

Getting rid of the media microscope would help immensely. Making it so that you don't have to be a millionaire to run and making it possible to get elected without selling your soul to lobbyists, Labor Unions and Corporations would be another.
