Chocolate contains theobromine. A naturally occurring stimulant found in the cocoa bean, theobromine increases urination and affects the central nervous system as well as heart muscle. Although it's the theobromine that is toxic to dogs, the type of chocolate can also make a difference. For example, white chocolate is less toxic than dark chocolate because it contains less cocoa beans which means that it contains less theobromine. So, the lighter the chocolate, the less toxic it is.

Chocolate contains caffeine which increases a dogs heart rate, and affects their nervous system. It can cause them to have a stroke or heart attack depending on the amount eaten. Dark Chocolate contains more caffeine than white chocolate, but both are toxic if eaten in a large enough amount depending on the dogs weight. All dogs, no matter the breed, or size, are affected by chocolate and can experience seizures as well as a fatal heart attack or stroke.

**Chocolate, coffee, tea and other caffeine products contain theobromine, theophylline and caffeine which can be toxic and affect the heart and nervous systems. (see resource**)

Something in the chocolate is poisonous to dogs and cats. Humans are immune to whatever it is. Here's a little more: an ordinary candy bar is not quite as dangerous as a dark baking chocolate bar. Reason: the chemical that is dangerous to animals is much stronger in baking chocolate than in candy bars.
But, to be safe, don't give ANY chocolate to your pet, especially if you have a little animal.

Why is Chocolate Lethal?

chocolate contains a substance called theobromine, which is chemically similar to caffeine. not to mention a small amount of caffeine too. theobromine is a stimulant and mood enhancer in humans, but to dogs, its like and overdose on cocaine and meth. thats why its bad for dogs.

It can make them sick. I've heard that if a dog eats too much chocolate at once it can die, but I'm not sure if that's true.
