Some breeds do quite well tethered. BUT the people do it because the dog is not wanted indoors, or tied up because it has not been trained, or starved, or beaten, is a dog in very poor circumstances.
Many hunting breeds and working breeds do not do well in homes, and should be provided for outside. I have a friend that has bird dogs. They are outside. Tethered or penned. His wife says they get better treatment than she does (with a laugh on her lips).
Another friend has a bird dog, and it stays inside with him.
I have both upland and water dogs. Both stay inside with me. My wife loves them more than I do, and spoils them rotten. I have trained them and spend lots of free time playing and working with them. They are outside during the day, and have ample fenced area to romp and play.
But when it comes to work time. They get very serious about their jobs and work very hard to please me. In return I respect and appreciate their love by giving it back to them. In a dog's life a kind word and pat on the head goes a long way.
So, maybe the bums that don't have that special breed, should be in the position the dog is in. They might appreciate their animals a little better.

People give alot of reasons why they do it, but none of them are good reasons. Sometimes they got the dog as a gift and instead of insulting the person who gave it to them by refusing the gift or giving the dog to a shelter, when they didn't want a dog to start with, they tie it up outside. Or, a child brought the dog home hoping to keep it as a pet, parents say no way or it can't come in the house, thus banished to the yard. Or, people think they want a dog and as soon as something happens in the house (an accident, something gets chewed or dirty) the dog is destined to move outside because people are unwilling to deal with the small things that happen when being a pet owner. It ranks up there with people who get cats, then get angry that they scratched the sofa and have the cats de-clawed. The crap about being a watch dog outside is just that, crap. What would compel the dog to protect people that don't give a crap about him? People are stupid!

Not all dogs do so poorly tethered and the anti tethering movement will lead to the needless killing of many dogs. If you do not have a better home to offer, and think that you are helping a dog by having an AC officer seize it only to put it to sleep than you should really think again. Many Mushers have tethered dogs outside, and many Huskies thrive outside. I am not saying that people should tether all breeds or that they should purchase dogs thinking that tethering is great for all breeds or all situations, obviously it is not. But confiscating dogs because they are tethered leads to death of the dog, is that helping the dog?

I absolutely hate to see that as well....even more so in extreme temps. It's completely inhumane. I can understand having the dog on a LONG lead for a little while. But there's no excuse for a dog to be outdoors all the time and chained up on a 2' chain. Would you do that to your kids???

some people are just crazy like that. or maybe they dont have a fence, so they tie up the dog. i have a friend who has her dog tied up, but shes getting a fence. as soon as she does, then she'll let her dog run around. but other people are just crazy, they'll leave the dog outside for days with no water or food. or they'll just beat it and abuse it until it dies. UGH! i hate those people!!! psychos...

I can't stand this form of abuse with animals (dogs). These people should never have a dog, or any kind of animal. They should be turned in and their punishment should be that they have to be tied to a tree, or dog box, usually without food and water. People need to start turning them in and maybe put an end to this abuse!!!!

some dogs are just outside dogs. i wouldnt tie a poodle up outside but maybe a german shepard of a pit bull or somthing like that would do better outside than in the house, and maybe just maybe these folks dont have room in their house but have plenty of room outside. if you keep a dog outside, make sure it has shelter though. otherwise it would be just plain cruel to the dog in question. what are you, some kind of greenpeace vegan to honestly ask a question as ridiculous as this? or are you just plain stupid?
