I have a very poorly behaved dog that we have had for a while now, and I am in desperate need of a good bark collar. Ideally, I would like something that would automatically emit a shock/sound/citronella, but I would also like to be able to manuallly activate it if he did something bad.

Training....the dog needs training. Any dog is only as good as the training it receives. So, you're going to shock the dog because you don't know how to train a dog. Sheesh! Obedience classes. They teach people like you how to train their dog.

No, but I would suggest a training class. If you're having a training problem with your dog, you need to find a way to communicate with him what he should be doing rather than use aversives and pain to turn off all behaviors. Do you have children? It would be like saying "my toddler runs around screaming all day long... what is the best way to smack them so that they just sit quietly in the corner?" The suggestion in that case would be to find an appropriate outlet for the kid's energy and then teach them how to act appropriately the rest of the time. That is the exact same thing you should do for your dog. Shocking your dog when he "does something bad" is heinously unfair because he never has a chance to understand what it is you *want* him to be doing instead. Dogs act like dogs -- he doesn't know he's being "bad". Don't hurt him... help him.

Dogs bark as a way to communicate. Obviously, obscessive barking can be irritating. Always allow the dog to bark at the onset, but when it's get to be too much, you need to train him to stop when you say stop. Some trainers suggest distracting him. Call his name "MAX- . . Enuff"! Then give him a distraction . .Tell him to get a toy. Remember to praise him for NOT barking when you say enuff. Also, a spray bottle with a little vinegar may be used. Don't foget tho to tell him to stop, and if he dosnt, spray- if he does stop . . praise him! Use collars as a last resort. Good Luck!

Yes,why not take your dog to obedience/training classes?? If your dog is poorly behaved,it is due to the incorrect training or lack of! Its got to be better than resorting to such a drastic measure.Give the training classes a go,you never know, your dog may suprise you!!

I don't reccomend one of those. My grandma had one on her shitzu/bulldog mix and any time anyone talked near the dog he got a shock. He didn't even have to bark. Just about any noise set it off, even other dogs that were barking. Don't get one. It's not fair to the dog.

Try tritronics, dogtra or innotec. Excellent collars and great results, if you know how to use them. Go to leerburg.com and get the DVD about using the electric collar for pets.
