My partner andI are currently living with another couple and they have 2 cats. unfortunatly the cats have fleas. The woman is trying to sort them out but it seems to be taking a while, and unfortunatly when I get bitten I get bitten bad and the spots come up like a rash almost. Its itchy and horible and I scratch the spots until I bleed sometimes. At least then I get some sort of relief, even if they can get sore (I keep the wounds clean and cared for btw)

I hate living like this though, as you can imagine. So until the fleas are gone what can I do to stop them biting me, or at least stop the itch!

HELP!!

The woman IS dealing with the fleas but it is taking time. I want to know how to AVOID THE BITES as they are painful.

Dealing with the fleas using a topical is good, but that will not deal with the fleas present.

If the cats have been treated, then the next thing to do is either clean the household and vacuum everywhere on the floor especially and wash everything the fleas could come in contact with.

The other option is to use a flea bomb. The house must empty of cats and people and treated. The fleas that bite the cats will die and the cycle will be broken, but that will take a while. If you are opposed to a flea bomb/fogger, then vacuuming is the only other option I know of. If there is carpet, then good luck.

I am going with the frontline, but you no longer have to go to the vet you can get it at petco. Also as far as you getting bit, The fleas are in your room. You need to treat it like it's Lice. Wash and bag once the cat is treated with fromtline for a week or two let it back in the fleas that are left will flock to him and die off. I am allergic to flea bites so I need to take benadryl when I get bit. it reduces the swelling and rash. An icecube rubbed on the spot will help a bit.

Visit this website, for Frontline. You will pay half of what a vet will charge, even less if you purchase 6 pipettes. No delivery charge and you will receive within two days. Acclaim flea spray is also available from them - it is excellent. As already advised, after treating the cats with Frontline allow them access to the rooms you use as the fleas will go to them in preference of you to bite. Although fleas will go to humans if no cat/dog are present, they cannot lay eggs after feasting on human blood, it has got to be through cats and dogs in order to multiply. As flea eggs/larvae can survive for 2 years (in skirting/floorboards) before requiring a "host" to feed on (any vibration will bring them out), you must get complete erradication from the premises in order to be free of the pests.

Sorry I cannot advise on your own distress of bites, it must be awful for you. Either be guided by others here or visit your doctor. Even a vet could offer advice on your problem as they would have been asked this many times!

I don't know what treatment the other woman is using for her cats, but it doesn't seem very effective if it is taking so long. Mention this website to her (after all it is she who should pay for the treatment)...

Good luck

You won't stop being bitten until the fleas are gone !
They can live in a carpet for weeks - and you'll do for food in lieu of a cat !
I know, because i bought a flat from someone who had a flea ridden cat. it took removal of living room carpet and i had to pay the council to come around and de-fumigate the whole place to rid me of the problem. Not good days, since there was a big sign outside my flat saying 'De-Fumigation in progress keep away' !!!!!

use wilkinson own brand household flea spray for £3.75. it works great, use flea treatment cat shampoo as well as flea spray.

what we did last time was kick the moggies out for the day. vacuumed the carpet, used the carpet washer, left to dry. vacuumed, flea spray. 30 mins later... flea spray... 1 hour later... flea spray.... leave for 2 hours. vacuum... carpet washer. vacuum.

then bath the cat with cat flea shampoo, and use flea treatment afterwards.

it's a long process, but it is worth it in the end.

also, have you tried Witch Hazel.

when you get a flea bite, put some witch hazel (not the gel, the bottle), onto some cotton woll and dab it onto your leg/arm/bitten area.

Getting rid of the fleas is the only way NOT to get bitten. It could take MONTHS to get rid of the fleas/eggs and larvae. Make sure the cats are on a VET approved flea product. DO NOT waste your money on over the counter flea products, they do not work.

ok well thats a pretty tough situation, but if you can get it REALLY REALLY COLD in the house, that kills the fleas on the carpet and furniture, and it helps the cats.frontline helps the cats too.as for your itching, dab the area that has been bitten with water, then cover it with salt...this takes the venom that causes the itch out of the bite,...problem solved,no more itching and your flea problem gone!hope this helps!!!
