Well I have to take some of you on about some things. I have been a breeder of high quality Goldens and I own now 2 beautiful Golden's. I have been doing this for over 20 years. I have a Golden who is a ball catching machine and one who won't let a squirrel in the yard for anything. Both are 90 pounds of mush. They are very active but not hyper, and very smart. I have sold many of my pups to hunters who love them because of their soft mouths. Several of my pups have gone on to be therapy dogs and 6 are seeing eye dogs. I took great pride in my dogs and the pups they produced. Golden's are very intune with their owners, thus making them a perfect family dog.

Labs are also very good family dogs, being that they too do very well for hunters. Their demenier is somewhat like a Golden but they tend to be a bit more hyper. Some say they are a bit harder to train because their attention span is not great and they get easily distracted. However if your a hiker or a runner Labs make great partners for that kind of activity.
Everything depends on who you get the dog from!!! someone who does the breeding for the money or someone who is a really responsible breeder and knows their dogs and pups.
I only sold my pups to people I got to know very well, thru a long process. If the perspective owners didn't like my way of doing things then they were not the right people for my pups. I never sold my dogs with full AKC registration. Everyone got limited to protect my dogs and their lines also to protect from having people breeding my dogs. That is a responsible breeder!!! Oh yes, my dogs all of them were hip, eye, heart, and elbow tested and thyroid certified!!

If you have known or own a golden who is a lump or is hyper or distructive than you got it from a bad breeder!!

Sorry to go on but I'm really tired of people saying things about Goldens who know nothing but just because they know someone who has one they think every dog is like that.
everything I have said also goes for Labs, find out who you are getting your dog from before you put your money on the table.

A Golden has slightly longer hair than a Labrador. A Golden is also bulkier than a Lab--not that a Lab is a slender creature. Labradors can come in dark brown, tan or black. A Labrador loves to play, all day, all night, anytime at all. A Golden is more restrained, being content in all things. Both dogs are great dogs for active people, but probably would not be good in a small apartment or a city home with a tiny yard.

Labrador Retriever is the full term for the dog. Then you get into Labrador, Lab, Yellow Lab, Black Lab, White Lab, and Chocolate Lab, depending on the color of the dog. It's all just a bunch of different names for the exact same dog. Well, breed, anyway.

Physically, labs are short haired dogs that come in basically 3 colors.....black, chocolate and yellow. They are med.-large sized dogs usually weighing 75-95 pounds, and they have thick chests and necks. Goldens are about the same size weight wise, but they tend to be more evenly balanced over their entire body. They are only one color....golden.....but they vary in shade. The breed standard is the lighter golden, but I prefer the darker. I think they are a more striking dog.

Intelligence wise, I think the goldens are a little more intelligent and definitely more obedient. Labs have a short attention span and tend to be more hyper, and you really have to work at getting them to listen. Goldens definitely have a lot of energy, but they seem to be able to better control themselves when commanded to do so by their owners. And, labs tend to be goofier in their personalities than goldens. Goldens are very affectionate, and both breeds make excellent pets, especially if you have small children.

I have had both labs, and goldens.....Labs come in 3 colors, yellow, brown, and black. GOldens are mainly golden of different shades, sometimes they are almost a red color.

The other main difference is the length of their hair.....Goldens have longer hair and Labs have shorter hair.

You may be surprised to learn that the shedding of a lab is worse than that of the long hair golden....The lab hair is short and fine and therfore flies through the air, on counters, stoves, clothing..everything. The goldens hair mainly falls off and collects around the baseboards of the house. Much easier for cleaning, just run the vacuum around the baseboards of the house.

Intelligence wise, not much. Looks wise, a lot. Labs are short haired and can be black, yellow or chocolate. Goldens have long fur and are gold to reddish in color. They can both be trained for hunting or show. In MY opinion, the are both overbred.

Different build, coat type, and slightly different personality. Both are retrievers (duh) and great dogs.
