First, make sure that you have a spark. Pull off the coil wire and hold it about 1/8 inch from any part of the engine. Use a pair of insulated pliers to hold it. Have someone try and start it. There should be sparks jumping from the wire to the engine. If ok, coil and module is fine. If not, replace the ignition module. Reinstall the wire on the coil and carefully pull off an ignition wire off a spark plug. Insert a screwdriver into the boot and hold the metal shaft of the screwdriver 1/8 inch from the engine. Try starting the engine again and watch for sparks. If there are sparks, The distributor and related parts are ok. If not, replace the cap, rotor and wires. Next, as long as you have a spark so far, take out the spark plugs and see if they are wet. Liquid on the plugs mean that the engine is getting fuel. If bone dry, disconnect the fuel line at the carb and momentarily crank the engine over with a large rag wrapped around the end of the fuel line. If no fuel is present, you have a fuel pump or line problem. If there is gas, it's the carb. Clean, dry and adjust the spark plugs then reinstall the plugs and fuel lines. Try restarting the engine ( it may have been flooded by all the attempts at starting) If still not ok, take off the distributor cap and, by hand, turn the bottom crankshaft pulley back and forth while looking at the distributor rotor. If the pulley turns more than 1/2 inch in either direction before the rotor begins to move, the timing chain jumped a tooth and must be replaced.
I hope this helps, let me know.
