So my friend from work drove me home the other night because I had too much to drink and when I thanked her for the ride, I extended my hand for a shake but she told me that I'm a guy and she's a girl and I should hug her goodbye. I'm a fan of the handshake but don't mind hugging. Is it not normal for me to shake a women's hand. Should I always hug the girl? Girls, would you insist that we hug or would the handshake be sufficiant?

No I can't stand it when guys decide to hug me before I decide I want to hug them. Handshake is a lot better choise for you especially with a coworker. Better yet, let the woman decide what she wants to do - either say bye, extend her hand for a handshake or open her arms of a hug. I think this is the most proper way.

Well it really depends on the situation. A kiss on the cheek is something you would do if the girl is your friend and you have known her for a long time. A hug is something more personal like you can hug a single girl more than a taken girl. Lastly a handshake is definately on a professional level. I never hand shakes my friends.

A handshake is totally sufficient. Hugs are completely dependant upon the person. Some girls really like hugs and to them they are perfectly acceptable. To me, unless I know you, I don't want a guy hugging on me, even if it is just to say thank you.

It depends on the person..I shake hands and sometimes I hug..I would still put your hand out first if she wants a hug and your ok with that then it's ok..If you find some a women that you really do not want a hug from and yes they are out there just tell her you do not feel right with hugging and offer a hand shake...

How old is this girl? Professionally, women should always shake hands. Socially, I think it depends on how well you know the guy and how comfortable you are with me. Personally, I will shake your hand when I first meet you and I only hug my close guy friends. I don't think that general rule is to hug.

If I don't know a guy, a handshake is always the way to go. If I feel friendly and affectionate with a guy, then a hug is much better!

Well your first answer was stupid..looks mean nothing to me..i just like to hug!! Shaking hands is good i suppose especially in business situations but i always prefer the hug. Its nice your a gentleman but its better to mess up and offer a hand then invitingly grab a girl..kudos to you!!

Whatever makes you feel comfortable. If you two are close, then hugging or a kiss on the cheek.
But if you are just friends or acquantance, then a hand shake should be fine, but it's rare, giving that she drove you home.

If you don't know the girl well enough to feel comfortable hugging her then don't hug her. If a hand gets held out for me to shake then I shake it. Its not a big deal for me. Either way, don't do anything that you don't feel comfortable doing.

well it depends on the girl. if i am close with the guy, like friends then a hug would be great, but if i just work with him then i would shake his hand. so it just depends on the relationship of the two and who the girl is.
