To narrow it down a bit, we may have children eventually, but not for several years & plan to rent for awhile until we find where we want to buy a home. To rent, we don't need to be on the water, driving distance is fine. We'd like a town that has a true neighborhood feel, somewhere we can walk around & get most things done, grocery shopping, dry cleaners, etc. I need a place with great running paths as well. Hope this helps, thank you all for your suggestions of the "best town to live in OC".

Also, we prefer Southern OC, not too close to LA. We've lived in NYC for many years & are ready for suburbia for awhile.

Laguna Beach is a very nice place plenty of shops, restaurants, art galleries and close to the beach (which btw is really beautiful) it's a place with character and people seem to take life slower there.

Laguna Beach is a nice area. Very small still compared to the rest of OC and most people like to take walks around the neighborhood. You can find small apartments to rent around there.. but it may be to close to the water for you... Than Irvine and Newport Beach are very nice as well.

Irvine is quite unique in that almost each neighborhood has a local shopping center for it with supermarket, movie theater, some even have a nice park with a lake that people take walks by. And eventually if you want to have chlidren, it is still a nice place to live and has excellent schools. Irvine also has the Irvine Spectrum which is a nice outdoor style mall with restaurants and movie theaters, some night life.

The top questions I would ask you: what city do you work in? and do you plan on having kids at any point?

As with all things in SoCal you want to live as close to work as possible. And if you are planning to eventually have kids you want to move someplace with good schools.

I personally think Brea is a really nice area in OC. It has good schools, shopping, parks & rec, and nice redevelopment going on. I would also agree with the former poster about probably steering clear of Santa Ana. My sister-in-law lives there in a really wonderful old neighborhood, but they send their kids to a private school in Orange.

My second choice would be Dana Point or Laguna, but then you are talking serious cash. But if you have it, why not?

Good luck!

With the exception of the area around Santa Ana, which has become a sanctuary city for illegal aliens, any town in Orange County would be a nice place to live.

i live in orange county and i can pretty much guarantee that you won't find them rent for that cheap anywhere... at the least, you might be able to get a motel for $800 a month... try some homeless shelters... at least they can sleep, shower, get a hot meal... good luck...

No children ever or no children yet? Huntington Beach if not yet. My four siblings and I grew up there in the 70s and we all still have the best memories of it. I understand it was also fine with Mom and Dad.

Irvine is clean, neat, and a relatively quiet place to live. Not much happens there, though, so don't go there if you would like some night life or action.
