YES!!!!
God in heaven lol I am sick of hearing this one.
Sound is produced by air moving at different speeds.
Th sound of tree falling displaces the air regardless if anyone is there to percieve it!
So it makes the sound. Definately. Beyond all doubt.
Its just that no one hears it. lol
Answered? Sorry I work in a forest and I get asked it by everyone.

This is a very profound question that has implications for the way we live today. There is an assumption built into this question that is the underlying cause of much of the universe's misery. The assumption is this, if there is no 'human' nearby, can anything at all be? This is presumption in its purest form, that nothing happens in this world unless there is a humanoid around to verify it.

Instead, try this: in a forest there are creatures who notice if a tree falls by getting out of its way as fast as they can, therefore sound must have been produced and duly recorded. If this were not true, we humans would notice several dead animal carcuses/skeletons scattered under every fallen tree we came across.

Sound:

1.the sensation produced by stimulation of the organs of hearing by vibrations transmitted through the air or other medium.
2.mechanical vibrations transmitted through an elastic medium, traveling in air at a speed of approximately 1087 ft. (331 m) per second at sea level.
3.the particular auditory effect produced by a given cause: the sound of music.
4.any auditory effect; any audible vibrational disturbance: all kinds of sounds.

Since there is nobody there to hear it, no organs were stimulates, there was no sound. So, by force the answer is NO.

It does make a noise though.

It produces sound waves, but there are no receptors to pick them up.
