Check the regulations for your state about the electronic callers. FoxPro makes a really great caller, but they are pretty expensive. I purchased a SONG DOG call by Crit'R Calls and it works great, its a mouth call that makes pup whines, adult whines, howls, and prey distress sounds as well. I also have a rabbit distress call with a mouse squeak coaxer on the opposite end.
I'll run down a list of pro's and con's of mouth vs. electronic calls.
ELECTRONIC: pro's: ease of use, remote sound gets
the animals attention away from
you, many different sounds
without having to carry 12 mouth
calls, hands free (most of them
just a push of a button or two)

con's: maybe illegal in some states,
expense (both in unit, batteries,
extra's like sounds, carry case,
if it gets lost or damaged)
bulk (depending on which model)
more things to go wrong and the
downtime if they do, same calls as
alot of others are using, limited
number of manufacters

MOUTH: pro's: small size (most of them anyway), fairly
cheap, legal, make different calls and pitches
with one call (again, most of them), can
sometimes customize it (change reeds,
shape mouth pieces, many to choose from
easy and cheap to repair or replace.

con's: learning to use them takes time, must sit
there and blow into them all day, prone to
freeze in really cold weather, noise comes
from you (animals attention focused on you),
usually use hands (movment and leaves you
with two hands for the gun), types of sounds

If you are just starting out I'd recomend some good mouth calls and instructional cd's and dvd's. Learn how to use the mouth calls well before you go out. Head out and get a taste of it and see if you like it before investing more money into an electronic caller. I just kinda asked myself this same question about a two weeks ago and the above is what I've decided to do. I'm pretty good on the mouth call after some practice so now all I have to do is locate some coyotes and get out there and try to call them in, if I like it, my father and I are gonna split a FoxPro FX5.

Good luck and good safe hunting. If ya wanna talk more about it, email me @ archybiker@yahoo.com

Apparently you already know that coyotes come in for distressed or young animals. As far as a good call goes, Cass Creek makes an excellent electronic call. They have several different calls already programmed in them (fawn, coyote pup, rabbit, etc.) You can get them either hand held or remote. Dick's Sporting goods has them as well as Bass Pro. I'm sure Cabela's will carry them too.

honestly here in colorado you can use electronic calls. so check with your local department of wildlife to see if you can use calls for predators and go that way much easier and more realistic to the song dogs. and then work your shot out to 300 yards at least if you havent already. but if you just need some calls to get started get a rabbit and a crow. the combo may be just right depending on where you live.

and if you are looking for manufacturer it reall doesnt matter who makes it as long as it makes a good sound and you can use it. and if its a mouth call make sure to get new ones every couple of months and dip them in listerine between uses you dont want a sore throat from them.

Buy a cheap squeaky toy for dogs. Tear it open and pull out the squeaker. Works like a charm. Super Cheap distressed rabbit call.
