I have a friend who cuts hair out of her home. Do I still need to give her a tip? I'm getting ready to go get my hair trimed and I don't know what to do.

Ok, also....

When she first opened up she was talking to me about how much she should charge. She then said something about some people not tiping her. I told her that I don't think she should expect tips since she is getting all the money people pay. I don't remember much more, but I do remember her saying something like yea your are prob right. But now I feel like I should tip her, but the hair cut is costing me $15.00 for a trim so I feel like that is enough.

You should absolutely tip her if you feel she does a good job. Just because she works out of her own home and gets to "keep" all the money she makes, doesn't mean she doesn't appreciate tips. If anything, she might need it more than a stylist who isn't self-employed. She's responsible for paying for all the products, water bill, her own taxes ( she has no employer to match her Social Security tax), etc... So, it's not like she just gets to put that $15 into her pocket. By the way, a "trim" takes just as much time as cutting off 4 inches, and $15 is pretty inexpensive for a cut.

Usually you are not expected to tip the owner of a beauty shop (though I have to admit, that the owner of mine has never turned down tips). Since your friend works out of her home, I think she can be equated to the owner. A tip may not be expected, but would still probably be appreciated. When all else fails and if you feel comfortable doing so, you could ask your friend.

I would say it is custom because if she cuts hair in her home its the same thing as in a beauty salon except you are in a different work place. But i would say don't tip as much as you would as if you were at a beauty salon.

I do my brothers hair. He has thick curly hair so he desires to maintain it super short. I brush all of it lower back and then I only initiate shaving. I save his on a 2 only because of the fact he likes it short. Then take the blade off and line up your sideburns and the lower back of your neck.
