babies like spazzing out in various ways, but I'm not a big baby fan. I would hazard that they are determining the difference between internal and external and are exploring the use of their body.
I once suggested to a young couple that they potty-train their baby like one commonly does with dogs and cats as that seems to sort things out fairly quickly but they looked at me as if I was something stuck under their shoe.

The answer depends on the age of the infant. After the six month mark when the majority of infants can sit up without help, there are two things that they do with regularity.
1) Chew anything and everything that they can get their little hands on.
2) Drop things off the high chair, crib, stroller - anything that elevates them off the ground - then watch as the object falls.
Answers?
1) Putting things in their mouth serves two purposes. They are learning taste and texture on one hand, and if they are teething, chewing objects helps the teething process.
2) I was told by a child psychologist that the infant is experimenting with gravity when he/she deliberately drop objects.

It's the same reason a dog licks his rear end .... because he can lol.
They do it because-
it's practice for real life
it's learning large motor coordination
it's sort of kewl to watch Dad's head bob back and forth as you throw the ball and hit him in the head with it
it's neat to see Mommy scramble under the couch to retrieve the ball.
Lots of reasons!

They are practicing their tantrum skills for adulthood. If they get really good at it they can become televangelists, political leaders or even president some day.
