To the best of my recollection, the term was first used by the track announcer at Mosport Park, Ontario, circa 1965. The BMC Mini Cooper S was the star of a Pro-Am event. There were, as I recall, 16 of them on the grid - and took off 4-abreast for the entire first lap. The announcer proclaimed that a "gaggle of Minis" was coming thru the Moss Hairpin, doubtless because of the formation.

it's called a metaphor. did you just see mike wallace's crew member get his foot run over by mcmurray? OUCH! the first half of the race was somewhat boring, but wow! it's really getting exciting now.

a bunch of cars that are close together and you saw what can happen ..when they all get together
