It is possible in some states to search birth records online.

All you need is the full name and city of birth, and you can find it.

Also, get him comfy and check his wallet. Thats how I found out my ex lied about her age on our wedding license, and it nullified our marriage.

You really know that a person is not truthful about their age when they can not provide legal documents in combination or they may just feel that you are not in need of the information. If this person has lied to you about other things, you have to decide if it is worth being lied to. One or two pieces of documents provided for visual inspection are not enough.

You may want to ask for a combination of an original birth certificate, passport, drivers license, social security card (cross reference), signed notarized document from his parent(s) stating the persons age, proof of age from the persons medical doctor.

One of the reasons that a combination would be good is because in short here are some of the documents required to obtain a social security card:

U. S. driver’s license; State-issued nondriver identification card; or U.S. passport.

If you do not have one of these specific documents or you cannot get a replacement for one of them within 10 days, we will ask to see other documents, including:

Employee ID card; School ID card; Health insurance card (not a Medicare card); U.S. military ID card; or Adoption decree.

The agency also sugests that the Social Security card is kept in a safe place. They also state that you not carry this piece of document with you.

There are other methods but in short, you have to have a real reason to "need" to know this information in order to have access or be privy to the information.

There was a time that more people were not fully truthful about their age in order to keep employment. It is when that action is used in some criminal action that it becomes illegal.

Example:
Subject: Age
Unlawful Inquiries: Any questions that tends to identify applicants age 40 or older.

Lawful Inquiries: "Are you 18 years of age?", "If hired, can you furnish proof of age?"
