I am a bird breeder and I would say a parakeet or a cockatiel would be your best bet. They are both great first pets and very easy to care for. If you want cheap (around $15-25) and don't care if its hand tamed then get a parakeet or 2 but if you can afford around $50-100 you can get a hand tamed cockatiel. My fav bird out of all is a cockatiel.

I recon a budgie for someone who has not had birds before. They are small, friendly, amusing, easy to look after, easy to finger train and talk, and cheap parrots. In Australia, you won't find one for more that $30, unless it is pedigree or something. The most expensive part of having a pet bird is the cage.
Budgies will also amuse themselves for hours by playing with their toys, chewing and investigating objects, and literally "talking to a brick wall". Most can be trained to repeat phrases, but some just prefer whistles and silly noises and refuse to learn very many words at all. If you want it to socialize with you and be finger trained, then don't be tempted to get it a companion. It will spend all its time with the other bird.
They eat mainly seed. Canary mix, budgie mix, small parrot mix are all suitable. They will eat most greens that you eat, plus some will have a go at being carnivorous. Make sure they have variety and some fresh grass seeds too. Just make sure that it hasn't been sprayed with herbicides or pesticides.

Since your previous bird just died and you don't know why, you will need to either purchase all new bird things, including a new cage, or disinfect the one you have.
If you go for a bird that is bigger than the one you had, you will need a bigger cage. Keep an eye on your local newspaper or look on http://www.petfinder.com
You can also look at rescues in your area. These will all be birds in need of a good home.
Please do your research before you get another bird. Also, have a good Avian Vet looked up so you can take your bird whenever it gets sick or hurt.

Well, Cockatiels are about $80 if they are normal greys and $100 if they are any other fancier mutations, but they are very sweet birds. IF that is too much for your budget, I'd say parakeets(budgies), canaries or finches.

You should be able to find a budgie and even a cockateil for less than $100.00. Cageing requirements, including cage, differerent types of perches (of wood: manzanita, pine) sand-covered manzanita perches or (inferior) concrete ones to wear those toenials down and for beak preening sessions, sisal rope, cotton rope, bowls, toys, healthy foods: kibbles and fresh veggies, some fruit, pasta...as you can gues, this stuff ALL adds up pretty quickly.

i have a parakeet
the parakeet i used to have was wonderful
if you spend sufficient time with them
and exercise patience
you can train them
William rode around on my shoulder or my finger
we watched t.v. and ate dinner together
plus, parakeets are relatively cheap
especially if you get them from a bucket o' budgies at the pet store
