Man sinned against God. God cannot just forgive your sins and just let you continue to live like you do. So he made a plan for his son to come and die for your forgiveness. Now he has given you the free choice to believe or not to believe that is your choice. If you decide not to believe then you will be punished for your sins.
John 3:16For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
17For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.
18He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

The Universal Laws and Conditions of Third Dimension Living (Spiritual Laws)
The Law of Free Will, or the Law of Choice.
We in third dimension have the right to expand or contract, to bring our creative and expressive energies out into the world in positive or negative ways. This is our ultimate decision. Not all of existence lives with this law as it carries with it both the possibility of great soul growth and the ability to loose soul growth and create evil or negativity. No matter what our circumstances, we have the power to choose our direction. We also choose to be under the influence of others or choose to be an example for others. We do it with a hundred actions which lead to the circumstances we find ourselves in today. Thoughts are things and the mind is the builder. The free will we use to create mixes with our ability to love profoundly, and therefore this path reflects the duration of the time spent in attempt to merge with the Great Soul of all Creation. The Christ warned of that which could destroy the soul (not Spirit) so there is always a possibility that a soul entity on its journey could become a God-hater with diminished light and be absorbed back into the Spirit of God to become just spirit and no longer a soul with separate awareness. A goal of our higher selves is to voluntarily and willingly surrender our egos to be a perfected spirit, hanging up the Soul-Overcoat of manifestation regardless of how many lifetimes it takes.

God does not punish he disaplines, but then we reap what we sow, but then there is the devil who likes to have fun with us to, but God soemtiems uses him to mold us, so go figure. God will call us into his presence until the day we die, even a serial killer gets this chance, they just keep saying no. Hitler said no, but then it is preached that satan blinds the unsaved eyes, so go figure. See, but satan was thrown to earth, and took the earth from God, not much of a punishment, but God got it back when Jesus crushed satan's head, on the cross. God could have left satan on the first planet revolving the sun, now thats hot, but Jesus did not die for demons, so go figure.

The Almighty YHVH created this world very good. Once man sinned, he could no longer meet the requirements of YHVH. Because of His great love for man, He sent His son the Savior. The Savior's name means YHVH is my Savior!--YAHOSHUA! The only way one can have his sins taken care of is to invite the Savior in to carry them. If a person chooses to remain attached to their sins, they will be consumed in the cleansing fire the Almighty will send to cleanse this world so He can make it new! How could the Almighty be more generous? He will punish, but it is called His "strange act" because it is so different from His usual reaction.

God isn't merciless and sadistic, He made Hell for devil and his followers,no longer human beings yet with the concepts we make we finally end up going there to boot. that's unfastened will He did no longer prefer us to be like robots and only circulate alongside mindlessly. He made the thank you to Heaven while there became into no way achievable for us to be with Him . God hates sin and could no longer enable it into Heaven( we already ruined the backyard of Eden and are not allowed there) God sent his only Son to die for us, so as that we ought to no longer could spend an eternity in Hell. God isn't the only that sends us to Hell We deliver ourselves there by ability of no longer choosing to be with Him particular God is conscious our hearts and what we elect yet he's often giving us greater opportunities to alter our minds and hear him.

Methinks someone does not like the choices presented :)
God doesn't punish you, you choose. If you don't like the choices, then you are just out of luck because those are the choices you get .... your idea of justice and fairness are not the same as God's :)

Because he loves us.
Your parents love you -- they punish you when you do wrong, but they give you free will. They encourage free will because they want you to become a responsible individual. They want you to make mistakes so you learn from them. They want you to learn good from bad, and they want to praise you when you do good.
Same with God.

Perhaps because we deserve punishment since we have a sin nature. Therefore we have all the "free will" we want, none of which merits heaven.

God simply gave us free will so we could choose whether or not to love him and to serve him. God has never done anything without giving advance warning. We may choose not to consider the warning, but it is always given. Just as the Scripture says at
Luke17: 26-30: "Moreover, just as it occurred in the days of Noah, so it will be also in the days of the Son of man: 27 they were eating, they were drinking, men were marrying, women were being given in marriage, until that day when Noah entered into the ark, and the flood arrived and destroyed them all. 28 Likewise, just as it occurred in the days of Lot: they were eating, they were drinking, they were buying, they were selling, they were planting, they were building. 29 But on the day that Lot came out of Sod′om it rained fire and sulphur from heaven and destroyed them all. 30 The same way it will be on that day when the Son of man is to be revealed."
1 Corinthians 10:6-11" 6 Now these things became our examples, for us not to be persons desiring injurious things, even as they desired them. 7 Neither become idolaters, as some of them did; just as it is written: “The people sat down to eat and drink, and they got up to have a good time.” 8 Neither let us practice fornication, as some of them committed fornication, only to fall, twenty-three thousand [of them] in one day. 9 Neither let us put Jehovah to the test, as some of them put [him] to the test, only to perish by the serpents. 10 Neither be murmurers, just as some of them murmured, only to perish by the destroyer. 11 Now these things went on befalling them as examples, and they were written for a warning to us upon whom the ends of the systems of things have arrived."
Even though we have free will, there is still a right way and a wrong way and God gave us his Word, the Bible so we would have help in knowing what his will is for us and so we could know how to please him. He also gives us holy spirit so that we can learn the truth and gain accurate knowledge of him, thereby we can get to know him and love him out of a pure heart. BUT, it is still our free will that decides whether we choose life or death.
John 17: 3: "3 This means everlasting life, their taking in knowledge of you, the only true God, and of the one whom you sent forth, Jesus Christ"
God has given us the knowledge we need in order to make the decision to love him and serve him and live, or to ignore his warnings and perish. We can blame no one but ourselves for the outcome. How is that not fair and righteous?
