I really think it depends on the organization you belong to. My instructor actually met his wife through kung fu lessons. and she now competes in kick boxing tournaments along with there daughter

I think it's more of a moral/ethical issue. Kind of like dating a teacher or a boss. They could use it against the student or hold it above them if something goes wrong (I won't give you rank unless you do this or because you did this). Also other students may not be comfortable with it. If you're both consenting adults interested in a relationship, find a new instructor.

I have some acquaintances that are pretty in to karate and I think that within the martial arts community sensei/student relations are frowned upon. This does not stop anybody though, because as we know, love conquers all. I believe the primary concern is that a subordinate relationship is supposed to exist between the sensei and students and one would not like power to be wielded for sexual gain nor would one want a bizarre hierarchy of favoritism based on sexual favors to form. Keep sex out of the dojo. Word.

Instructors have authority over his students so basiclly its not a good idea. It doesn't make a good relationship because the instructor always has that authority over the student in class. Also Professionals would not date students. They should have a teacher student relationship and thats it. Instructors should always be professional.

Male or female instructor's should have morels, as a colored belt I have been attracted to both fellow female students and instructors. Today as a Black Belt it's the same and just like the past, I don't mix business with pleasure.
Though we all human (or are we) I can not speak for others.
Never!

the answers and the questions are getting stupider every day.
there's no written rule or even unwritten rule by the hierachy in any style.it comes down to the individials morals, principles and ethics.senseis or whatever in the particular style are still human like everyone else.as long as it's all above board and doesn't intefere with the other students learning i don't see a problem.

hi there... i met my boyfriend before i knew that he was an instructor in jujitsu and karate.
i wasnt a student in the class but after much persuasion i decied to join.
when inside the dojo we were no longer girlfriend and boyfriend, we were no longer best friends... we were student and pupil.
when you are in the dojo, in class you should treat your relationship purely proffesional, dont offer her/him extra help if you are an instructor. if you are the pupil dont expect any extra help or leaniency. my boyfriend kicked me out of the dojo for swearing at him when he threw me in a demonstration.
my advice is when you are in classes together treat your relationship as professional, do not show that you are in a relationship...it will only get the rest of the class riled up and when you in th dojo every one deserved equal and ultimate respect, regardless of what goes on out side the dojo.
there are no laws against pupil teacher relationships in martial arts... unless one is not concenting or one partner is underage. just be sure to avoid any kind of sticky situations that before you do announce your relationship that you are oth ove the age of 18 and it shouldnt be a legal issue
just as a little example, Geoff Thompson, who used to teach karate, is now married to one of his students...

It depends on the ethics of both parties involved.
As long as class stays the same, and there is no favoritism during class, then go ahead.
Just remember dating a student can be bad for business if you're not careful.
Best of luck !!!

obviously age is a consideration, the student is over 16 years of age .primarily the sensei has a duty of care to all students moral ,physical and psychological. he sets the standards. therefore since i have personally experienced this situation ,it is wrong and should be terminated asap. if it all went wrong the fallout would be cataclysmic.good luck
