Many people come right out and say that "no dog should be bred until it is two years of age." I want to partially dispute that and clarify it. The idea comes from the age which x-rays are taken for OFA certification to be free of hip dysphasia. I am here to tell you that it is not a recommended test in ALL breeds. Several smaller toy breed parent clubs do NOT recommend HD testing, primarily because it is not a problem in their breeds and because the often used anesthesia is risky particularly in some toy breeds. Each parent breed club does have certain recommendations or requirements of their members for health screening and the protocols for each individual breed recommended by the individual parent breed club should be followed as they pertain to that particular breed. In other words there is NO reason to put a Chihuahua through anesthesia to test for something that is common in Great Danes. Also on the OFA website you can see the statistics for each of the breeds, and the more commonly done test for those breeds. Bellow I will put in links to the Dachshund Club of America so that you can look p the recommended health screening protocols and the OFA website.
And yes if you take a clean paper towel and wipe the right spot you will probably find that your 7 month old is in season and spotting.

Yes dogs can go into heat anytime between 6-10 months. You should never breed a dog at that young of an age. Responsible breeders wait until 18-24 months. Any decent breeder will wait until the dog has had its clearances done, Hips elbow etc. see offa.org for information on this. That only if shes AKC registered. Check her registration to see it you can breed her it will say full or limited. With limited registration you can breed but not register the pups with the AKC. Read some books and literature on breeding dogs before you start. I can give you some help there. Go to our website burdicklabradors.com helpful hints page under training thers lots of breeding information there.

Yes - she is in heat. It's normal for a dog to have it's first season at this age.
Why do you want to breed her?
Of course you know that no dog should be bred unless it's at least 2 & has undergone thorough screenings to make sure it is healthy & worthy of being bred.
You should contact the Dachshund club of America for more information about health problems in Dachsies so that can avoid passing on genetic problems.
Also, examine the reason you are breeding. Are you breeding because your dog is a Champion & you are breeding her to show her puppies? Do you have the money to have surgery done on her - say an emergency C-Section if anything goes wrong?
I would strongly recommend you save yourself from potential heartache & have your girl spayed. She will live a longer, healthier happier life.

General female dogs come in heat for the first time between 6-7 months of age. Then typically every 6 months after that. Females should not be used for breeding until they are 2 yrs old, and after you've had all necessary health testing done to ensure she is healthy and not passing on extreme health issues to her offspring. The male should be health tested also.

Yes, she is in heat. Not unusual at her age. Breeding her is another matter. She is still very much a PUPPY. NO GOOD can come of breeding her at this age, her pups would surely be less than they could be.
Great answer from the Collie guy, do be diligent as to breeding. There are thousands of doggies in shelters and roaming the streets because no one bothered to plan for pups. At least you are giving it thought. Learn while you wait for another year or better as she becomes full mature.
Good luck and happy thoughts.

She's definatly in heat;;make sure to keep her away from the local male dogs, as they'll come from all over because of her scent. If you breed her, make sure not to take all the puppies away from her her first litter. Keep at least one if possible, or she will go into depression. Wait until she's about a year and a half, and very healthy before trying to breed. It's best to actually have the male, or let them visit each other often to get aquainted. When we first tried to breed my male Doxie, he was terrified of the female!

Absolutely! Just as a person can start their period quite young (11 yrs old) so can a dog. But at this young age it is not recommended to breed. A dog is just not developed enough (mentally & physically) You should wait to at LEAST a year and a half to breed.

you can tell if there in heat if the nasty parts are swollen. i would wait till she goes thru another heat before breeding, that way you know shes fully developed.
