as i recall the last of the 850's had both the obd socket and the under hood diagnostic plugs. for the obd socket enter the car as generic/global obd 2 system and select display codes if communication is not possible suspect internal ecu problems. if the under hood sockets are used place pigtail into socket # 2 for fuel faults and press button for 3 seconds then watch l.e.d. it will blink a 3 didget code [1. 1. 1. is the pass code] after code has blinked out press button again[system will store up to 3 codes so do this until first recorded code repeats] now plug pigtail into socket # 6 [this is the ignition diagnostic socket] and repeat as for fuel until all codes stored are read . they can now be interpeted with a haynes or bentley manual

i am really not qualified to answer this question, what year first of all. the last volvo i worked on had its own self diagnostic set up under the hood , just had to move a few wires around. have you checked mitchell or iatn on the net you will have to be a little more specific on there. have you tried a different scanner?? sometimes this is all it would take also . pretty sure i have been no help but there is my 2 cents.

What diagnostic machine are you trying to use?? Volvo dealers use a Volvo scan tool, some others readers can also read some but not all codes. Are you trying to read OBDII or Volvo?? What exactly are you trying to find out and with what instrument??

Is there no communication at all? Have them check the fuse for connector. Problem could be a fault in the ECU, I'm sure it's a rebuild not new or in the wiring itself!

it could be a ringer, we have a similar system for saab and we get a few of them a year, get dealer to check vin (in the ecu) with diagnostic comp just to be sure.

Lee this is not an easy question to answer. If you tell me the year of your car,the model and what engine is in it, i might be able to help you.
I take it your using a EOBD tool ?.Plug near the handbrake lever,or the front of the gear stick or the black plug under the bonnet on the drivers side ?
Need more info please.
