The average vet visit fee for a small exotic animal (includes a parakeet) is from 25 to 45 dollars, depending on the vet. Any vaccines you may need will be additional, usually around 10 to 15 dollars each.

Most reputable pet stores get their birds from vendors that require certification to sell healthy birds. I know they check for diseases by a vet, in some cases administer vaccines, and often band them(id bracelet on foot). Most of the time, records on hand proving that, must be kept on hand. With that being said, unless you think you may be exposed to many other birds, your bird shouldn't be able to contract any weird diseases in most cases especially if kept indoors. That's why most local governments don't monitor the vaccine records of individual birds, only the initial vendor or breeder certificates.

I have a 19 year old cockatiel that has never seen the vet. Giving a varied and healthy diet plus daily free time out the cage is worth it's weight in prevention. If you still have concern, getting your bird checked annually and vaccinated would be your best option.

Wow, these $25 answers are really astounding. It's especially important that you take your potential bird to a certified avian vet because other vets who're not specialized in exotics or avians will not be able to treat it properly and to the fullest degree, and since birds hide illness, it's even more important that they know everything about birds and their information is down pat.

An avian vet runs about $50 to $85 US. Be aware of emergency vet costs as well. An emergency vet visit for my lovebird (in an unspecialized clinic - when all other vets are closed) was $82 CDN just to have her looked at. Remember, the $50 to $85 is just for a check up. If the bird is ill or needs treatment, they will charge you that extra amount for anything from medications (probably start around $10 for antibiotics and painkillers) to x-rays ($150 range).

Many kudos to you for having this be a determining factor. Many bird owners neglect this incredibly essential factor and it's great to see someone who thinks things like this out first.

A normal visit costs me $80.00. Then there is the cost of the tests. Depending on what the vet has to do it can be hundreds to thousands of dollars. My most expensive vet visit included gram strains and blood work for the tune of around $250.00.

Call your local vets and ask them what a normal vet visit would cost through them and if anyone is used to handling and treating birds. That can be an issue. Not all offices can deal with birds.

Call vets, ask pet stores, bird groups first if cost is that important to you. I live in Altlanta, GA and when I took my Alexandrine Ringneck parakeet to the avian vet 2 yrs ago it cost $70 for the visit (no tests or vacinations were involved).

It depends on what's wrong with the bird, and what vet you are going to.

Why don't you phone or email a vew vets in your neighbourhood and ask them how much they think you would spend on a parakeet in it's life time. They might be able to tell you how expensive it would be.
