Figure this out in your head first "DO NOT" write it down yet........Take 1000 and add 40, then add another 1000, and add 30, then add another 1000 and add 20, and then another 1000 plus 10. Now what is your answer? = (5000 right?)
Okay now, on a piece of paper do the same thing and add it up, and what is your answer? = (4100 right?)

1000 + 40 + 1000 + 30 + 1000 + 20 + 1000 + 10 = 4100

that's a good one. The reason is you are working in thousands and then when you have to carry the one to make 100, your mind automatically tricks you into carrying it over to the thousands.
In other words when you get to 90 and carry the ten, your mind doesn't see the 0 in the hundreds column, it only sees the 4 in the thousands column and it naturally wants to make that a 5 which makes the answer neat.

It's 4100.
There is 4 1000 = 4000
40+30+20+10 = 100
You're confusing 100 for 1000.

ok... follow me on this, when you add these figures in your head, your adding 1000and so on, you keep adding and when you finish you mind is telling you that 40+30+20+10 is 1000, but it is only 100

when u added 40, 30, 20, and 10
u made it 1000 not 100
sop 4000+100=4100
u did 4000+1000=5000
