I suppose so, but it would have to be a really nice shelter with a bathroom , and living room, and toilet of course.

I would say yes as long as you don't live in an area that may have coyotes or owls. Both predators can easily snag a small dog or cat. They can't tell the difference if your dog is a wild animal or natural food. The Jack Russell down the street became "food" as well as my neighbors large white cat.
Dogs may have lived for thousands of years outside but man has domesticated them so they don't have the same survival skills as wild dogs. Also they need to be part of a "pack"; your family, and requires interaction, walks, and lots of love.
Another thing to consider. Will it be unhappy and yap all night long? That would not be very acceptable, especially to your neighbors. You can always get him used to a crate to sleep in while indoors if you are worried about him chewing things up while you sleep. My 8 month old lab has been sleeping in a crate in our room since he was 3 months old. Every evening around 9:00 p.m., he automatically goes upstairs and goes into his crate for the evening. That's where he feels safe. That's the only time he stays in a crate.

Toy breeds tend to not do well outside. They are bred as companion animals and need to be around people. If banished outside they can develop many types of behavior and emotional problems. Toy breeds should never be left out in the cold or inclimate weather. If only an occasional stay outside or warm weather temp thing with lots of attention and exercise it would be ok, but this breed of dog is very active and people orientated. They need thier people and lots of things to do. If you just put this dog outside and don't exercise it and it gets little attention, when you bring it back inside you are looking at a lot of problems. I personally think that if you have a dog just to tie it outside and love it only when you have time, you shouldn't have the dog ..it isn't fair to the animal. Especially a breed like this that is bred as a devoted companion. If you are doing this as a temporary summer thing , if the dog has a good shelter lots of food and water plus attention and things to do, it will be ok.

Of course as long as you're giving it heart worm med so it wont get heart worms from mosquitoes. Also why would you do this to your little dog. i would understand if you put it outside for about 15 minutes for a bathroom break and to get some fresh air, but i don't think letting it live out there is such a good idea. i mean its going to find a way out because Jack Russel's are athletic and hyper so they will find a way. And in my opinion i think it is just plain mean to love your dog throughout the other seasons and when it was a young pup and then when it comes to summer you just throw it out of your life for like 5 months and then bring it back into it? your Jack Russel will probably be lonesome and hurt to think of you abandoning it. Sorry if im being harsh but i just dont think its right to shut your dog out of your life like that and then bring it back in. I would be confused. I mean why even buy a dog if youre just going to shut it outside in the yard. It could be having a better life inside a warm/cool home with its family. But its not my dog so Yes, it could as long as you give it plenty of water/food/company.

i read with interest the various answers. some of us who work at night, cannot leave a dog inside for 12 or 13 hours . my dog gets a special treat when he has to stay outside at night so that i can go to work. he has an enclosed shelter and seems quite happy. he stays with me in the daytime when i am sleeping and he is a wonderful watchdog.

any dog can sleep outside, especially if you give it shelter, although most dogs will find their own shelter; think about it dogs have survived for millions of years outside. however, jack russelles are very smart dogs and very athletic and more than likely they will find away out of your yard which puts them in danger. more than that, why would you not want you dog to be an intregal part of your family. i don't understand why people would spend money to buy an expense dog, take it to vet to ensure it's health, buy it food and then through it in the back yard where it has little interaction in their life. dogs are social animals and i fully believe when you do this you are setting yourself up for problems down the road with barking, digging, chewing, etc. if you don't want a dog just save your time, money and yard and don't buy one. sorry to flame just my opinion.

Why would you want a dog to stay outside to begin with. A pet is to love and is part of the family. I dont agree with people leaving pets outside no matter the weather. Its a lonely life for the pet.Its such a small dog why keep it outside,,makes no sense at all to me.

I guess they could, but I would never do that. My jack russell hates to left alone even for a second and follows me everywhere. She sleeps in my bed every night. But some dogs love to be outdoors all the time so I guess it depends more on the personality of your jack!!

It could, but why would you want it to? If you get a dog as a pet, you are responsible for its care. You should love it as it loves you, and allow it to sleep in the warm, dry house where there is plenty of clean water and food for it.
I think people that get dogs and make them live outside are ridiculous.
