It's pretty hopeless, I'm afraid. I've been impatient and I've tried all of the quick-fix suggestions people have made, and none of them work. Microwaving it just cooks the avocado, which makes it nasty -- same for boiling it. Putting it in the food processor to try to blend in into a puree just left me with lots of tiny, hard, tasteless bits of avocado.
Wait a couple days for your guacamole -- you'll be much happier than if you waste an avocado by making bad guacamole.
The suggestions for ripening it faster are good ones -- especially putting it in a brown paper bag or leaving it near apples.

I've had this problem before, but unfortunately I didn't have any great way to do this. What I did was cut it in half and microwave it for a few minutes and then kind of "chunk" it out, then food processed it. It was not as good as having soft avocados though. Hope that helps.

Time is about it. But, in order to cut the time down, put the avocado in a bowl of all-purpose flour. Be sure it's covered & it will ripen faster than just letting it sit on the counter... Don't ask me why...

It will ripen faster if you place it in a loosely closed paper bag, but not that much faster. It is hard because it is not ripe. This means that even if you find some way to soften the flesh and make use of it, it will not have the taste and texture that you're looking for without ripening naturally. Got a time machine?

I think putting it in a paper bag with some bananas might help (bananas release a gas - called ethene - that makes other fruit and veg ripen faster)

Go to the store and buy a ripe avocado. Do not store avocados in the cold until after you've cut them open.
