i had mine done over 4years ago and i had a dull throbbing pain at the back of my skull for the first few weeks. like yourself i got abit worried so i went back to the piercer - he assured me it was normal and in time it went. i think its just your body identifying something strange in you and reacting with it. doesn't hurt at all now!

if the pain is still there after a month though id go get it checked out!

hope this helps xx

This is interesting.

You probably know already, but Chinese acupunture practicioners insert their needles at locations distant from the area they are treating. The ear is often used, It is possible that the point where the piercing was done is at one of these points, related to the back of your head. Another example is that if you press the P6 acupreesure point (on the front of the wrist), there is a reduction (in some well-conducted scientific studies) of nausea and vomiting!. These are examples of things that cannot be explaned anatomically.

I suspect that your ear piercing / pain in back of head has arisen thriugh some similar mechanism. It's not possible to explain by physiology or anatomy. I would hope that the discomfort will settle. If you take the 'stud' out, there is a risk that your piercing will heal over, but if the pain is too bad, that may be your only option!

Hope this offers some explanation and reassurance!

Getting your ears pierced in the cartilage there is a greater chance of infection. Keep cleaning the area with warm water ever couple of hours or use alcohol. Leave the earring in. If it gets too bad go see a doctor. Also when you got it pierced they might have hit a nerve and that could explain the pain.

That certainly does not sound normal at all. It might not be related to the piercing but chances are it is. I would ask at the piercing parlour to see what they reccomend, and if they can't help see your doctor. I hope you are better soon.

Sounds like it's the earring. Talk to the piercing parlor & see what they recommend.

The piercing has probably caught a nerve!
