Start with formulas that have selenium sulfide or zinc (name-brand or generic, formulas vary.)

Then, if those don't work, you might not have regular dandruff. Try a formula with coal tar (yes, it stinks, but the smell wears off somewhat as it dries and it's not very noticeable.)

Then, try formulas with salicylic acid.

And as far as dry hair, just use the shampoo on your scalp. Put conditioner on the rest of your hair while the shampoo works on the roots (yes, both at once.) Rinse...it should be better than shampooing all your hair.

Conditioners have cleaning ingredients in them, so your hair will be clean and it won't be as dry as if you used shampoo on all your hair. Just use the dandruff formula for your dandruff-the rest of your hair doesn't need it.

If it starts getting wild or greasy, mix some baking soda in with your conditioner. That will remove residue and leave your hair fluffier and more manageable (but won't dry it out.) Also, you can try some lemon juice mixed with your conditioner (but NOT both at once--fizz-bomb!)

If you have some beer you don't want to drink, pour it on your hair after you wash it. NO, it doesn't stink like a brewery. But it makes your hair look shiny and bouncy.

Go to your local drug store and look for a shampoo that is tar based. Ask someone for help in locating it. That is what a hairdresser recommended to me 15 years ago and it works. Good Luck!!

Find a shampoo that treats your conditions. Usually they'll have it on the front of the bottle.
