Dogs are not made to eat food made with wheat, corn, soy, sorghum, etc. Purina, Iams, Science Diet, Pedigree, Kibbles n Bits (excuse me while I barf), or any other brand you can get in the supermarket is not suitable for optimal health. Chicken Soup, Innova, Canidae, Merrick, Wellness, Solid Gold, The Honest Kitchen are all good foods and Chicken Soup is the cheapest in my area.
No, Science Diet and Iams are not great at all. Not even horses and cattle are designed to eat grains, they are designed to eat grass. Dogs are carnivorous omnivores. Here is the ingredients list of Science Diet Chicken and Rice, one of the "better" formulas:
Chicken, Brewers Rice, Rice Flour, Ground Whole Grain Corn, Soybean Meal, Ground Whole Grain Sorghum, Chicken By-Product Meal, Animal Fat (preserved with mixed tocopherols and citric acid), Soybean Oil, Chicken Liver Flavor, Dried Beet Pulp, Dried Egg Product, Flaxseed, Iodized Salt, Vitamin E Supplement, Dicalcium Phosphate, Potassium Chloride, Choline Chloride, Calcium Carbonate, vitamins (L-Ascorbyl-2-Polyphosphate (source of vitamin C), Vitamin E Supplement, Niacin, Thiamine Mononitrate, Vitamin A Supplement, Calcium Pantothenate, Biotin, Vitamin B12 Supplement, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Riboflavin, Folic Acid, Vitamin D3 Supplement), minerals (Ferrous Sulfate, Zinc Oxide, Copper Sulfate, Manganous Oxide, Calcium Iodate, Sodium Selenite), preserved with Mixed Tocopherols and Citric Acid, Beta-Carotene, Rosemary Extract.
Brewers rice is the junkier, less nutritious part. Corn, sorghum, beet pulp, and soybeans are all pointless fillers. It contains those evil by products plus an unnamed mystery meat "animal fat" source. That can be road kill, zoo animals, euthanized pets. Nasty. And Science Diet is at least as expensive as Chicken Soup and Canidae. What a huge ripoff. There is NOTHING scientific about "Science" Diet

Pedigree is crap food so good for you to realize your dogs need a change. Purina is also crap and they have a history of doing inhumane testing on dogs and cats in their manufacturing plants.
I suggest you look for a much higher-quality kibble for your dogs, such as Natural Balance, Merrick, California Naturals, Eagle Pack, or Nature's Recipe.
I think it is so ironic that Pedigree has this new ad campaign which makes us feel sorry for the dogs in the shelters every day, yet they do not even use good ingredients in their kibble, and they also do animal testing for their food. The fact that they donate money to the shelters every time a bag is bought sounds to me like a hidden scam to get more people do buy it.

Asking the same question, I have researched dog food for years and the best answers I have found to be helpful are that dogs are meat eaters by instinct and any brand of dog food that is made with real meat in the first 3 ingredients is a good choice. But look at the other ingredients too and be very careful of the preservatives that can cause cancer Try to stay with the brands that use natural ingredients. We use Eukanuba and they have many different choices depending on your dog's requirments they also contain omegas for your dog' health and DHA/ARA which are used in baby formulas as well for better development of the brain. Iams is also another good choice as long as you are feeding a brand with meat ingredients. Stay away from brands that use Corn and soybeans in the first few ingredients as they are fillers and the dogs are trying to get the nutrients it lacks by eating more of it which in turn makes more of a mess in the yard and can cause health problems as well. Eukanuba contains what they need in a less amount so they do not eat as much of it-less mess. may be a little more expensive to buy but less in the end as they require less to eat. I am no expert but it works for us. I hope this helps.

Depends on how much you have to spend on your dogs diet. Innova is a great dog food but very expensive. Same with timber wolf dog food. If like many middle class families you want a good dog food but at a reasonable price I reccomend Chicken Soup for the Dog Lovers Soul brand foods. They come in breed/size formulas (ie large breed, small breed, adult puppy etc) and are good quality food at a good price. They use human quality chicken, turkey, and fish along with essential oils and a great balance of vitamins and minerals. If shopping around...just remember that corn is not digestable and causes many skin conditions. When buying dog food DO NOT buy anything with Corn or meal in the first three ingredients. It is useless and only making your dog eat more to get any real value out of it's food. You can almost never find a good dog food at a department store. Feed stores and pet stores carry the better brands.

Rescued my ciarn terrier a year ago from the humane society and I've still not found a dog food that hasn't caused allergies. So, after reading about what's really in dog food (sickly dead animals, mold, mildew) I can understand. Even the Hill's perscription diet she is on now hasn't helped. She's getting an allergy test in a few days and then I'm going to start her on organic dog food from the health food store. If that doesn't help, then she'll be having what I'm having for dinner. lol

Depends on the breed of the dog.
If they are a large breed then feed them large breed dog food...Nutro Natural Choice is a good one, they also carry small breed formula, weight control etc.
Science Diet/Eukanuba which has been recommended by others is okay but not as good as Nutro, Royal Canin(expensive), Candidae, Eagle Pack to name a few as well as any of the holistic formulas.
Pedigree. Purina, Kibbles n Bits etc. are not good foods. Anything considered a grocery store brand (which is any pet food bought in a grocery store) is not considered a top of the line food.

First while Pedigree and Purina aren't good quality foods they do NOT put euthanised dogs/cats in their food!!
Now as for best food..any food that is meat based...meat as at least the first 2 ingredients, one that does NOT contain corn, wheat, soy or beet pulp..dogs are carnivores, meat eaters not goats..they do not process grains effectively..in otherwords they don't extract proper nutrition from grains and aren't designed to digest grains. It takes up to 3 times more of a grain based food for a dog to get proper nutrition then it does a good quality meat based food. Corn, wheat and soy are high allergens, soy and corn have been implicated as the cause of unexplained seizures in dogs, beet pulp is totally worthless and only adds unnecassary sugars to the diet.
Look for a good food such as Canidae, Wellness, Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul, Innova, Solid Gold, Timberwolf, Premium Edge, Blue Buffalo just to name a few.
Foods such as Kibbles n'Bits, Beneful, Alpo are very low quality and foods such as Pedigree, Purina, Science Diet, IAMS/Eukanuba and other such supermarket brands are low quality.

I'd say any type of dog food that doesn't contain meat by-products, artificial flavors, doesn't have corn or soy as the primary filler. Examples of good quality dog food are: Canidae or Nutro Max.

My vet recommended Science Diet mixed with any sort of canned lamb and rice food for my fifteen year old Samoyed.
I alway fed him Purina Puppy/Dog Chow and started mixing it with semi-soft and canned food when he started loosing his teeth a few years ago. He now eats what the vet recommended
much more heartily and he seems happier. He is three years past the life expectancy of Samoyeds, and still acts like a puppy sometimes.
