We got the very last number wrong when we were filling out our direct deposit for our federal Tax Refund. On the Irs page it says that the refund was direct deposited into our accound on Febuary 16th but when checking the account its not in there. Im pritty sure that they will send a paper check in the mail. But is there anyway to fix the problem so they can direct deposit it? in not how much longer do you think it will take to get the refund in the mail? thanks for any and all help!

The bank should reject it back to the IRS and the IRS will send you a paper check in the mail this will delay your refund by approximately 2 weeks There is no way to change the account number for DD at this time

The bank will reject the deposit. It may take a few days for the IRS website to reflect that status. Once that happens, they'll cut you a paper check. That will take anywhere from 2 to 6 weeks to arrive. Sorry, but there's no way to correct that error, you'll have to wait for the paper check.

The payment will NOT be deposited to another account. Changing one digit in a bank account number will never reveal a valid account number of another depositor. One of the digits in the account number is a check digit that verifies the actual account number. If a single digit is off, the transaction will always bounce. Additionally, almost all banks will reject an ACH transaction if the account name is not a close match to the name on the ACH transaction. If the account name was John T. Jones and the ACH transaction name was John Jones or possibly even Jack Jones it would be accepted. But if the name on the ACH transaction was Amanda Smith, it would reject even if the account number was correct.

Don't feel bad I'm in the same situation and apparently they are right there is no way to change it . The ironic thing about this whole situation is mines was to be deposited on the 16th also, but it was the 4th digit in my checking account that was wrong so I guess we'll get our checks at the same time, I'll keep you posted.

Christina is wrong. ALL bank account numbers have a built in 'check digit'. If only 1 digit on the form is wrong, the account number IS invalid. No one has the account number you wrote. Once you file the return, there is no method of changing the account number. You will have to wait for the check.

Well, if someone else has the account number you put down, there's a chance that the money will be deposited into their account. I'd check with your bank to make sure that it gets straightened out.
