It seems that the bases that have been closed have outlived their usefulness and are not financially viable anymore. The are trying to close a master jet base here in s.e. va only because some halfwit nimrods bought houses close to the air station and started complaining about the noise!! The city was going to offer to buy the land the houses were on, level the houses. But now the BRACK commission has changed its mind FOR NOW. The city council wasn't smart enough in the past not to allow development so close to the air station and allowed homes/businesses be built in the crash zone. I was stationed at the air station before the developing started back in the late 70's and an F-14 crashed where there is an industrial park now. Also on the flight path is a huge shopping mall. It's not IF, but WHEN a plane crashes there.
The bases being added overseas apparently are needed for support in those countries.

Good question! In fact, there's a lot of money in Bush's budget for closing bases in the US!

The U.S. military has identified 14 locations for long-term bases in Iraq, many of which were formerly used by the Iraqi military.
14 in one country and the one thing that both Sunni and Shia want is no permenant bases...We need to guard their/our oil.

What would Americans think of a Iraqi base here..or German..or Cuban. We are a bully......

Ellis Airforce Base is being closed and they were guarding the Houston skies..we now get our air cover from Oklahoma. But, starting next year the skies will be guarded by un-manned armed drones...WTF ???

Actually Mr. Wrong, there are plans to close bases in Germany and Italy and bring those personnel back to the US. In fact, I'm unaware of any bases being built anywhere, US, Europe, Middle East... Unless you are talking about the bases being upgraded in Iraq and Kuwait that will be turned over to those countries when we leave.

They've been closing bases for decades, now. And we've also closed many foreign bases we had.

We are building some because of strategic needs or due to treaty, but certainly nothing that would diminish our defense in the least.
