I don't know about chips, but the invisible fence works well with most dogs, and, contrary to what some will tell you, it does your dog no harm. It's a little pricey, but surely it wouldn't be more than a chip.

Microchips do not keep dogs within boundaries. They are used to identify a dog if it gets lost, the problem is that they don't work unless someone scans them.

Don't know about this particular one, but they tend to be very expensive, involve quite a lot of training & do not always work.
