There's a possibility you can find a room for rent in a shared apartment for $500 but at this point it would have to be in a pretty crappy neighborhood or very far up in the Bronx. A friend of mine recently found a large studio apartment for $900/month up in the Woodlawn section of the Bronx which is basically as far north as you can get in the city. If you found a roommate you could handle that kind of rent but if you've only got $1200 to your name then I'm not sure how you'd go about paying the first & last months rent plus security deposit needed to get the apartment in the first place. You'd need to find someone you trusted to help contribute to the 'down payment'.

If you go on craigslist.org, you'll see there are rooms for rent in your price range but most of them are in pretty bad neighborhoods. Getting a job in NYC is fairly easy if you are willing to take a job waiting tables at first. You can make good money that way but I know a lot of people are unwilling to work in the restaurant industry (I know I can't handle it). Restaurants are always looking for waitstaff and you may be able to get a job in a few days. Getting a 'real' job that you like may take much longer.

I don't pay taxes so I can't help you with that part of the question.

We don't use tokens anymore. You have to buy a metrocard. The fare is $2.00 per ride. A monthly pass is available for $76 for unlimited rides. NYC is a very competitive city and often it is difficult to find a job. There is a state income tax. It's somewhere around 8 or 9% I'm not really sure. Your $1,200 is going to cover one month's rent in New York IF that. Unless you live in a terrible, terrible neighborhood in Brooklyn or the Bronx, you will not be able to get housing for less than $1000 per month. Hope this doesn't crush your spirit. Good luck!
