I don't. It's a waste of time and no one uses the sidewalk in the winter anyway. Plus there's that weird legal thing that you mentioned.

yeah we shovel the sidewalks but in our town we have to. By law here you aren't liable if you shovel and salt your sidewalks. If someone breaks an ankle in the snow, you are.
Also as a runner there is nothing more annoying than unshoveled sidewalks. I can understand it if plows are too expensive, but judging by the size of these houses, money shouldnt be an issue

What if the person happens to live alone and is disabled? Whould you advovate legal action because the person is unable to shovel snow?
Thank God I no longer live in a cold climate (Ohio - brrrrrrrrrr!) but in the desert southwest.

Responsible people remove the snow & ice from the sidewalk for two reasons....
it's the responsible thing to do
you'll get sued if someone falls & gets hurt if you don't shovel you sidewalks.
We always do...I like my money in my bank account.

Yes & Yes.
I rent, but our town requires that the public sidewalk in in front of the house is cleared. My lease says i have to do that, as well as the walks to the porch, garage, etc. Even my rental insurance states that i need to "maintain the property".
I don't think your assertion that by _not_ clearing the walk, you abdicate any responsibility. Check your local ordinances and your home owners policy.

Be careful. In the UK, at least, if you touch it, and somebody falls, you are liable. If you don't touch it, you're not.
