Obviously you start with cooking pasta. Once you've cooked the pasta you cool it being as you said it was served cold. You can include a number of things in them, my favorite would be cheese. Salad dressings are also used, so I'm guessing that the "white sauce" your high school served might have been ranch dressing.

If it was served cold, then most likely the "white sauce" was mayonnaise based. Cheese and cream sauces get too firm to serve chilled.
One of my favorite pasta salads is simply made by boiling Rotelli or Rotini (spiral pasta) until al dente. (almost done but a bit firm). Set them aside to cool.
In a bowl mix Mayonnaise, a drop of vinegar, a pinch of sugar, some slat and pepper to taste. Then add finely chopped onions, celery and optional chopped black or green olives.
Combine all and let chill in the refridge for at least 8 hours. then re-season to taste.

I haven't the slightest clue because our school's pasta salad was the tri colored pasta with black olives, and like a italian dressing!
Maybe it was like a ranch dressing that was served over the pasta salad!

the noodles are rotini. could they have used ranch dressing? my kids put that on pasta salad. really-pasta salad can be made any way you like. cook the pasta and add any cold vegie you want.add some cubed cheese and thats it. i add the dressing as its served so the pasta doesn't soak it all in.

My friend makes a yummy cold pasta salad using Kraft creamy Italian dressing for the sauce. She adds cheese, olives, and peperoni, but I think you could add anything you want.

With all due respect, how could random people possibly know what your high school, (wherever in the America it may be), put in their pasta salad years ago?
I'm not trying to be a jerk but it absolutely boggles my mind how someone could ask such a wide open, ambiguous question, that no one could conceivably answer.

1 small onion (chopped, if desired)

Mix pasta with tomato, peppers, onion and olives.
Put in the refrigerator for about 1/2 an hour.

If you have left overs, You will have to"re-wet" it by adding a little more salad dressing the next day, especially if you subsitute the dressing with a fat-free dressing.
