Heading to Macau in a couple of weeks and would like some info about good eateries, places of interest, etc. I would rather see the "real" Macau than the ultra touristy places. So, any hints or tips about where to go for a bit of a cultural shake up would be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys

Hi qtg - my fave cyber partner in crime!
Decided to check in to Macau for a few days seeing as we were going to be in HK, I thought it was worth more than the ferry ride.
Am I getting nervous? YES!! If you had asked me a couple of weeks ago I would have laughed, but I was bridesmaid at my friend's wedding on the weekend (the one at Torbanlea) and it sort of hit home!
How's things with you?

I'd recommend Coloane, the southernmost island of Macau. Macau is actually a peninsuala (Macau city), and two islands just to the south. All are connected by bridges, and at most 15 minutes to the furthest. Coloane has some lovely old Portuguese architecture, beaches and restaurants (and countryside!) It's where people from Macau go to 'get away from Macau'. There's a couple of hotels down there if you want to stay the night - the Pousada Coloane and another... Worth a look on google at any rate.

My fiance and I flew to Macau by helicopter from Hong Kong which was pretty amazing and very quick (16 minutes) We found a guide at the airport who drove us around in his car and took us to some interesting places and he waited for us while we explored. I particularly liked the old church which has been demolished but the front still remains, as well as the Shrine with all the stairs leading up the mountainside. We stayed at the Mandarin Oriental which has a fantastic pool area. We visited one of the casinos and although we didn't gamble, we did have a fabulous meal. It was interesting to note that at dinner, none of the chinese people who came into the restaurant wanted to sit anywhere near us ,so we had one half of this amazing restaurant all to ourselves. Macau doesn't have alot to see, so I recommend that you can get to Hong Kong during your travels, which will definately keep you busy and it is just a quick ferry ride away.

Macao is a fascinating place. I use to take the hydrofoil from Hong Kong to Macao. There are gambling Casinos. interesting architecture very much like Portugal. That is not strange, because Macao belonged to Portugal for some 300 years. Food, especially seafood is excellent.
