My dog found a corn cob on a plate (after someone finished it...) and ate the entire COB. I'm worried now about how this is going to digest or pass through her system... Should i be worried enough to go to the vet tomorrow after the weekend?

This can definitely cause a problem, its not very likely it will pass on its own. I would recommend finding an ER vet in your area who could do some x-rays and see if it could be removed endoscopically. If its possible, it may be cheaper than surgery and your dog wont have to go through the major recovery of abdominal surgery. Good luck

You need to get your beloved dog to the vet NOW!

Ingesting a whole corn cob like that is serious. If it was chopped up, that is one thing, but a whole one is an entirely different story. There is a VERY HIGH chance that cob WILL NOT pass through the small intestines, will get stuck there, cause an obstruction, and your dog could get very very sick from this and die. The corn cob is probably 1 1/2 to 2 inches in diameter, while the small intestine is probably only 1 inch in diameter, or less. That is a recipe for disaster.

I have seen it happen. I work in a vet clinic.

GO TO THE VET NOW!

PS - I agree with Goldengal. How can some of you be so ignorant?!

Wendy - I am a VERY blunt person, and sometimes the truth hurts. In addition, I am not calling the asker ignorant, because she DID ask, and didn't just ignore it. I am calling all of the answerers ignorant that told her not to worry.

When my dog got some corn, it passed in whole kernals. I wouldn't be concerned about the pieces of corn but a whole cob will get stuck and needs the vet's attention. This will cause a blockage which would be fatal. Call your vet or ER NOW and see if they think you should wait.

Yes - you definitely should if you suspect that she didn't chew it up. If she swallowed it whole - there will definitely be trouble.
She could die.
My friend's Golden ate a Mr Potato Head - several thousand dollars later - the dog is still alive.
Good luck.
PS - Golden Gal & Mocha Latte - why do you have to call people ignorant? That's pretty rude. It's better to ASK then to waste $1,000s on a vet bill if you've never had a dog & don't know any better.

As far as i know dogs can't digest corn cobs, i would probably take him/her to the vets just for safety as i know that once that a dog died because a dog got a corn cob lodged at the bottom of its stomach and died because the food could not get past it. i would probably just take it just to be safe. Just don't panic the dog who died it was about a week before it died as its stomach was full so it did not eat, and died of starvation.

This is a emergency situation honey, Get your dog to the emergency vets now. Corn cobs do not pass but get stuck in the intestines and cause an obstruction which can lead to death.
Do not try to make him or her throw up because it can get lodged in their throat and choke them to death.
I'm not trying to scare you but this is really and emergency!!!!

Please get you dog to a vet NOW.
I cant beleive how ignorant some of you are..this is not an ok situation at all.

Nope, they have been throwing entire corn cobs in kibbles for years. This time her digestive system will do the grinding, it will all come out in the end.

hello Kat no fear my dear this to shall pass. your basset hound may not enjoy the passing of the cob. but it will pass and the puppy will be ok. just be sure there is plenty a water handy for the dog to drink. as the cob may in deed soak up the fuilds in her belly. but dont be worried. in a day or so she be clean as a whistle.

It should digest just fine. Look for it in her waste for a couple of days; you should see signs. If you don't, or if she seems to be in pain, especially when doing her business, then call your vet.
