I am helping my friend to complete her tax return but I am having problem with the name written on her W2 and the name written on her Social Security Card.

The name registered on her Social Security Card is Tina Concepcion Augusto Martinez II
where: Tina Concepcion is her first name,
Augusto is her middle name,
Martinez is her last name,
and II is her suffix

Now her W2 states Tina A Martinez.

My question is what should be the right entry for the name I will put on her tax return.
a. Should I follow the W2 which is Tina A Martinez,
b. Or follow the W2 but put her suffix ... Tina A Martinez II,
c. Or follow the name on the Social Security Card... I am using Tax cut software ... so it only allows me to enter her name like this Tina Concepc A. Martinez II.

I hope someone can help me especially those who have experienced this kind of scenario.

Thanks,
newtaxlady

Now if I need to follow what is written on the Social Security Card, my next problem is I can't fit her two first names on the name entry of the tax software I am using. So instead of Tina Concepcion, I can only type Tina Concepc... Will IRS accept it?

The IRS will match, by computer, names and social security numbers with the Social Security Administration. Use the nae as it appears on the Social Security Card. Ignore the name on the W-2, that will get matched by ssn, not name.

I would use option B. The IRS wouldn't even look at the name unless there is a problem so don't worry about it.

The IRS verifies the SS#/Name with the SS Admin. information. You always use the name as it appears on the SS card.

If you efile and the name on the return doesn't match the ss file, it will reject. You could then change what you entered and refile.
