My 2 year old cat has recently been waking me up every night...crawling all over me while I am sleeping, and he just cries and cries and cries. He always has food in his bowl, and I give him too much attention as it is. The vet didn't want to put him on meds just yet. Does anyone have any suggestions on what to do?

Is his litter box fresh and clean? Is his food bowl in another room in a safe distance away from the litter box? Has something signifigant in your life changed recently: a move, marriage, death....?
Sounds like he is either in pain or lonely. Maybe he needs some toys or even a companion.

Tough question. Putting her down because of inapproriate elimination = NO. Putting her down because she loses her balance and falls = Possible. Putting her down because she is just old = NO. Putting her down because she can't see well = NO. By the way 16 is old but not that old. I honestly think that if she is still capable of spending hours just purring in your arms, she is not ready to make that transition to the other world. Before you make that ultimate decision, is there a possibilty of running blood work on her - maybe she has some underlying problems that will make this decision less stressful for you? You did nothing wrong by going to a cheap vet (Money dosen't neccessary gets you the best vet.); we all can only do what is within our means. Take comfort that at least you are taking her to a professional. Good luck.

It sounds like he's a very needy cat. Maybe he gets scared and lonely at night. It may be a phase, but you can always adopt a buddy for him. You could try leaving a light on in a small room like a bathroom or use a few night lights so he feels more secure.

Do you have a garage? When our cat does this, we simply get up and put the cat in the garage with his litter box and some water. He doesn't like it very much, so after a while, he began to associate his bad behavior with having to sleep in the garage. The behavior has become very infrequent, although he still tries it occasionally.

What kind of meds are you talking about ?? Hopefully not Retlin. My kitten kept me awake all last night too. She likes to bite me when I'm asleep.

Keep a mist bottle filled with water by your bedside and when kitty acts up give him a squirt.
