My parents are very conservative and I have socially been "out of the closet for years." My parents are essentially the only people that don't know. I live in New York and they live in a conservative town in Illinois and have been tryig to set me up with women for years. Is it time to tell them? How should I tell them?

It should also be mentioned that my parents are evangelicals and would hate me and not even consider me to be their son if I told them. I love my parents and really don't want to lose them. My friend came from a community similar to mine. After he came out to his parents, they never spoke to him again. I'm not sure if I want this for myself.

Mom Dad I love you and respect the fine job you both did bringing me up. I have something important to tell you which may or may not come as a surprise to you both. I hope this doesnt change your opinion of me as your son but I am gay. I have known this for numerous years and I believe you have a right to know. Then wait for shock, tears, then hopefully hugs all around. Eventually anyways.

Tell your parents that you need to talk to them. If you can, visit them in person, this kind of news doesn't go over well on the phone or in a cowardly email. Be honest with them and explain your position. Yes, it's time ...

Why do you want to come out? Do you want to hurt them? They can hardly fix you up when you are thousands of miles apart. The people of Illinois would actually appreciate it if you stayed in New York. The conservative people and town of which you speak are doing just fine without you there. No one cares that you are gay, and likewise do not care if you live or die. Just go live your gay life.

Just come right out and say it.
Best to get it over with and have them hear it from you rather than someone else

Yes, it is time to tell your parents. It would be better for them to hear it from you. Parents' love for their children is unconditional. Be honest with them.
