First of all... Its not ME.

A friend of mine had toddler twin boys when she found out she was prego with triplets. Yikes! No fertility drugs either, she was on the depo shot. Anyway... some people were appalled, and said she should consider "selective abortion", and have one or two of the babies aborted to give the other(s) a better chance at survival since triplets are so high-risk. I was wondering what your opinion is on this. My friend is a wonderful mother, happily married, great career in biology and her hubby is a doc. Its not like they couldnt support the kids. Would you kill off one or more of your babies if you were prego with multiples AGAIN, to be "fair" to the other children?

Oh, and all of the babies made it thru birth. There were 2 girls who were identical twins, and a boy who was in a separate sac. Kinda cool huh, that you can have twins AND another separate baby in one pregnancy. Anyway, one of the girls only made it to a couple weeks old. The other two are about 7 months old now. The boy *might* have autism, but other than that, all the children are happy and healthy and well taken care of.

I personally would not, I would let nature take its course, I feel like who am I to make a decision such as that? Though i can see why she would have considered it.

I most likely would NOT for triplets, but beyond that, quads, etc, yes I would probably have a reduction. I work at a women's hospital and perform OB/GYN ultrasounds. I've scanned many, many multiple gestations and it is true that multiples, especially monochorionic twins, are at a much higher risk. The problem with this situation is that once one baby is sick enough, they all have to be delivered (usually). It is a very involved topic and there is much to consider. Just multiples is not the only thing to consider, it is also the mother's health...some women can carry triplets or quads or more very easily, other women have difficulty with even one baby.

I would never judge another for their decision---whatever they decide. It isn't an easy decision to make and until you are the one responsible for the decision it is impossible to really know what you would do.

I personally wouldn't want to abort one because I think abortion is very wrong. Where there were only 3 I definitely wouldn't have. That shouldn't have even been an option. People have triplets a lot and everything is fine. Your friend definitely made the right decision.

honestly i have heard of selective abortion(which is horrible) in pregnant woman carrying 4 or more but not triplets people have triplets all the time with little or no complications. If your friend can afford the children, carry them all and if one is not meant to be god will decide and take one with him-or not.How anyone can choose which baby they will keep and which one they will murder is beyond me.I say if your blessed with three babies, give them all a chance at life.

First of all Wow that is alot of kids! umm, i think yeah i probably would consider aborting one or maybe two of them for survival rate. However i think it all comes down to what your definition of life is i think that the moment a child can take a breath on there own, they are considered a person so with that i dont think haveing an abort. is actually killing a child. i think that as parents we need to do what ever we can to protect our children and if that means that you dont think one hundred percent you can handel 5 kids then dont have 5 kids you will just end up stressed and resentful.

absolutely not, I have a set of twins and triplets......It is for her Doctor to tell her how to proceede. They all have chance if the person follows the drs orders. This is only my opinion.

Keep them all despite the predictions of survival. Its best to be known for a fighter to save your children then to be known as the mother who killed a couple just because the doctor said it would save the others. I would put it in the hands of god not some doctor. That's what mothers do sacrifice their life for their kids.

Well if you can afford it and your babies have a chance of being born healthy I think you should keep them all if it was a life threating situation then yes I would probably do what was beneficial for us to make it.

I would if there was more than 3,
However I don't think the doctors would let me keep them as I have high risk pregnancies and i'm at risk from placental abruption

I think you said it quite nicely: "Would you kill off one or more of your babies..." What kind of person would make a decision to 'kill off' one of their babies? And how would a person in good conscience ever recover from such a decision?
