I really want to be a fighter pilot after leaving Uni. For years I have been working on my fitness, leadership skills, IQ, qualifications, and joined the Air Cadets in my youth.

However within the last couple of years (I am now 21 and due to graduate in June) I had had to wear glasses whilst driving due to very mild short-sightedness...are my chances of being a fighter pilor now completely scuppered?

I just want an honest answer from people in the know, because if there is no chance I can make it I'd rather not try than having my heart broken and confidence dashed having gone through all the hassle of applying. I'm prepared to take it on the chin if this is the case- it'll just be such a shame to waste all that prep work I've been putting muself through...I was so devoted!

Any serious help welcome- thanks!

I heard that pilots in the RAF have to be at near perfect physical condition to be able to join. Im pretty sure that a major consideration would be eyesight and that proberly means a perfect 20/20. my dad is a bus driver and you should hear the hassle he has for wearing glasses when he drives so u can imagine when the MOD send you up in a plane that costs something like a million quid.

YES. But only 8% of people in the Air Force are pilots. You need 20/20 vision, no glasses either.

Why don't you apply for a prospectus from the RAF Recruitment Centre. I'm sure you'll discover exactly what they are looking for in a potential pilot - and it's not just 20/20 vision. Best of luck.

Try the U.S.A.F. They seem to encourage short sighted pilots who cant distinguish friend from foe! If you have an itchy trigger finger they will fast track you through the ranks. You will be a Colonel by next summer!

My son is long sighted in one eye and has pretty poor vision in it. When I asked the opthalmologist if it would affect him in later life, she said he could never be a pilot. What about laser treatment though?
