When I was a teenager, I worked at an egg farm (one of the independent contractors for, yes, Rose Acre Farms!). I've got to tell you it was the worst job I ever had, although it never put me off eggs.
Usually in the setup, there's one rooster kept, in a cage, far away from the hen pens, and he's considered to calm down the hens. Despite the fact that he's kept far away from the girls, during egg inspection, I'd find one or two fertilized eggs per (6 hour) shift. And those were just the ones I found, heaven knows how many I'd miss!
It was definitely Ripley's Believe it or Not during my days on the egg farm. Eggs without shells, only membranes; conjoined double eggs; hens without legs... But based on my experiences during my rural childhood, I'd rank milk production #1 cleanest, egg farms next. Pork production would be in there somewhere. The rest, well, you take your chances...

city youngsters don’t look to attraction to close crap about chickens! “Gekker” is ideal, A fowl will lay eggs with no chicken. those gained't produce infant chickens. If a chicken is around the egg would have a niche of blood in it. i love “Noel” answer , How would the chicken fertilize the egg through the shell. LOL I actually have seen some advise roosters yet that would must be one undesirable a$$ chicken. LOL

bird,
I haven't seen one, ever in nearly 40 years!
I thought 'candeling' was supposed to take care of that...perhaps the person at the switch was asleep.
