It may be ear mites or some other infection. I'd take him to the vets. They can diagnose him correctly and can give you medication to fix the problem.

THe dog may have an ear infection there are a couple of things you can try before you bring her to the vet. Take a mixture of rubbing alcohol and distilled vinigar 50/50 mix. Get a cotton ball soked in the mixture put the cotton ball in the ear and relase the fluid in to the ear cannal quickly wipe the inside of the ear with the ball allow the dog to shake it head to expell the fluid on its own. Give the dog a treat and some time 1/2 hour or so then do the other ear. Give the dog another treat and lots of love. Repeat this prosses once a day for 7 days. This will clean the ear and the cannal. if there is and infection present it will help clear it up if you do not see improvement in a few days 4 at most make sure to see the vet. I hope this helps.

Lily gave a good answer.....I gave her a thumbs up. I had a shepard/doberman mix who experienced the same problem. First, if there is an odor w/ the redness, take him to the vet. If it is just redness it may be associated w/ increased scratching of the ear by the dog. Your vet will be able to give you a good ear wash solution to use. I still do this to my dog periodically for anti-bacterial protection. It is very effective.

He could have an ear infection or ear mites. My Lab is very prone to ear infections and when he gets them his ears turn red and he scratches them. There are solutions you can buy for both problems, but I would take him into the vet so you know exatly what is going on. I clean my Lab's ears everyday and my PIt Bull's ears once a week. You can try cleaning them and see how dirty they are.

There are ear cleansers on the market. See if there is any crud inside the ear. Don't poke it though. Probably ear infection or mites. Either way, you need to have him checked out by a vet.

Could be caused by mites or a bacterial infection. I ordered some non perscription medication from the veterinarians Foster&Smith catalog. Lot's cheaper than a vet visit.

If your dog's ear smells bad, it's an infection. Either way you shoulf take him to the vet. They can make a diagnosis better and get you the right medicine before it gets any worse.

It can be environmental or food allergies. Your vet can do an allergy panel to check as GSDs don't typically get the yucky ears of spaniels and that sort of thing as their ears stand.
