Different departments use various types of terminology from shift, squad, group, team etc. I think you get the Idea. Smaller departments can use as little as 2 and larger departments (ie Baltimore, Washington D.C., Los Angles, Kanas City) might be very large numbers. Hopefully this helps.

It will vary greatly from department to department, the one I worked for last worked 7am to 3pm and 3 to 11 and 11 to 7

But before that it was 12 hour shifts 6 to 6 working 4 days on and then 3 day off

They usually have 3 shifts like 6 am to 2 pm then second shift would be 2 pm to 10 pm then third shift from 10 pm to 6 am.

Depends where you work, here in Ontario there are some that work four on/four off 12 hour shifts. We work a five week rotating schedule of 10 hour day/afternoon shifts and 8 hour night shifts.

Do you mean a work shift -- I worked three weeks of 7am to 3 pm, then three weeks of 3 pm to 11 pm, then three weeks of 11pm to 7 am, then three weeks of all three shifts followed by 6 consecutive days off. I had other days off in between. Technically they were all 40 hour weeks

How long is a shift? 8 hours, or until you finish if you are urgently engaged in police activity.
