this is in response to what WELLSK is saying (above):

Don't listen to this person. This is just another local of Hawaii (who is probably on drugs Crystal Meth) trying to defend the state of Hawaii by saying people from Mainland come to Hawaii "big headed" & "think they own the islands". I DON'T THINK SO BRAH! This is the year 2007, wake up & smell the pineapples!

Listen, there are racist people in every state, from what i hear is that Hawaii is one of the worse. When you visit, don't take anyone's advice about "pretending to be a local" & don't listen to them when they say "don't stick your head up thinking you own the islands". WHATEVER. The locals always got something to say about people from Mainland. IGNORE THEM. Your going to be on vacation, you don't need these people trying to tell you how to fit in, just BE YOURSELF & HAVE FUN.

I grew up on Maui before moving to Honolulu, so I can say that there is a considerable amount of racism, but that goes for any of the Hawaiian islands. It's not racism in the conventional sense- it's not like they show in the movies, not all hapas or locals instantly hate you because you're white. You're a local if you grew up here, if you're black, Flip, haole, hapa or whatever. It's more of an attitude based racism- you come here, you act like you own the island and someone gonna have a problem with you. Don't drive like an idiot, don't drop in on someone else's wave and be respectful of someone else's home. Sad to say, most people that come here from the Mainland are incapable of doing that. People think because they support a large part of the economy here that it gives them a right to act stupid and big headed. The best advice I can give to anyone who is visiting or moving to Maui is tread softly. This is not New York, and attitude is not appreciated where visitors are concerned.

There is a lot of resentment towards folks who move here and don't respect the local culture and way of life. If you are perceived to be one of those types, you may encounter something. You must understand: there are lots of gated communities shutting out folks who once spent their childhood on pristine beaches. Maui is under seige by greedy and overzealous developers who don't care about Hawai'i or the Kanaka Maoli.
