Garden wedding ideas?

Question

Getting married August, so having a garden party at our own home. I have brought two Marques and have thought about balloons and ribbons, but really have no ideas...have thought about a dance area, but will it not be difficult to dance on grass????
Any decorating ideas or tips would be much appreciated as the web seems empty.

Unless someone is ballroom dancing, or tap dancing... dancing on grass is fine. Plus, 1/2 of the women in the group will be grateful for a reason to take off their shoes.

As far as decorations go... balloons strike me as "Birthday Party" or "Retirement Party" or "Real Estate Open House Party". Not worthy of a wedding, the embarkment on a new life.

Ribbons (if they aren't plastic) draped along stairways and fences would be nice. Candles in an enclosed vase on each table is nice, assuming you will have tables. Once people are actually at the garden party... they really won't care about the decorations., particularly if you have a dance area! I guess it's a matter of what is important to the 2 of you.

If you have tables, placing a disposable camera on each table is great gift... that keeps on giving. Everyone will take candid shots, and send the camera back to you! (Or that's how it's supposed to work). Even if you get a couple of them back, you will get some great photos of what went on during your wedding party that you didn't possibly have time to notice!

Dancing on the grass isn 't that difficult. However it could kill off the grass for a while afterward. I wouldn't use balloons unless you are planning to have a balloon release. Ribbon are nice if done well with a good wired ribbon. You didn't say what your budget was . Flowers are probably your best bet for a garden wedding. You really wouldn't need expensive florist designs. Pick flowers fresh from the garden, borrow from other's gardens. Place them in nice crystal vases, which you also borrow. Tea candles or votives in rose bowls surrounded by marbles and water work really nicely to. String trees with white fairy lights. For the evening.

I just saw this question. My sister in law got married in my back yard. We had a wood frame swing set. We took the swings off and decorated with netting, greenery, lattice, etc.

Set up chairs in the back yard. For a dance area, you could use a large cloth tarp spread on the ground. (level) There are so many ideas.

You could look into renting a tent, but that is expensive. Check on ebay for wedding tents that you can buy for much cheaper than renting.

Rent some tables, etc. Balloons - make a balloon arch.
You can buy the arbors with lights and decorate for the wedding ceremony. Decorate w/topiaries. So much you can do on a budget.

Check you 2nd hand shops and yard sales. I see wedding stuff all the time.

I had a garden wedding last july when i got married. It was beautiful. We decorated an arborr (arch way) in the front of the garden for us to stand under to get married, with white sheer material, and ribbons. We added a beautiful potted flower/plant to each side of the arbor. It was very nice.

getting married outside is great . My daughter got married at the lake on a Summer evening . One thing that helps with weddings is finding a theme. For that evening we picked under the stars.
We put white lights in the trees and silver metal filigree stars.
There were lights in the tents we put up for the food. Tulle is great for covering lights to give that fairy effect. We also potted
a large branch and painted it white we hung wire and bead bookmarks from this with a thank you for favors. Also don't forget to be considerate of your guess and put a can of bug spray by the sign in table if you live where thats a problem. Congrats and have fun. Designer

a great idea would be to grow all your own flowers for the wedding. some white flowers that are beautiful and have a great fragrance are: allysum "carpet of snow" or "snow crystals" these are about 4" high and have a sweet candy scent (cut them back after their initial bloom so they will repeat in august)
. white sweet peas: a vine about 5' high the flowers are an old fashioned standby with a strong fragrance.
Datura (brugmansia) 3'-5' tall plants for large pots that have huge trumpet shaped white flowers that face upwards or dangle like bells. the aroma is powerful and very beautiful.
Morning glory vine "moonflower": this is a white flowered morning glory(grows 12') which actually does not open its blooms until the sun is setting, they are large saucer-shaped blooms with a delicate fragrance.
White stocks: about 10" high, they bloom well into August if you cut them back in early july. they have an intoxicating clove-like spicy/sweet aroma.
The most beautiful of all fragrant white flowers is the oriental lily "casablanca". you need to purchase the bulbs in spring and plant around the middle of may about 6' deep. plant some more in early june just to make sure you have some in bloom for your wedding. they grow about 3'-4' tall and are really gorgeous and in the evening they release a haunting and memorable scent.

some white flowers that are nice to look at but are scentless are: white snapdragons, white petunias, white asters, white gladiolas (bulbs), white phlox, white verbena, baby's breath(plant lots of baby's breath and make successive sowings every 2 weeks right up to the beginning of july).
for shaded areas use white impatiens, white begonias, white browalia and white fuschias.
