My daughter attends a 4K program at a local private school. I know I cannot claim private school tuition for K-12 grades but can I claim a 4K program?

All Educational Deductions and Credits are for Post Secondary Educations, meaning Colleges, University's not for elementary and high school educations.

Since a 4K program is kindergarten, I'd say no, but you could call the IRS and ask them. The child and dependent care is for child care programs but exclude programs that are primarily for education, which 4K would be.

I think calling the IRS is a good idea, but it seems to me it would make sense to claim the child care deduction if you otherwise meet the criteria. The IRS publication on this matter isn't very helpful in defining kindergarten, but when people say kindergarten, they usually mean 5K.

Some people call their pre-5K programs nursery schools, some call them preschools, and some call them kindergartens. It seems it shouldn't matter what their name is. We even have some "kindergarten" programs that are 3K. They really don't learn anything differently in any of the programs, no matter what they like to call themselves.
