I feel sure that different factors like heat/temperature and humidity effect the potatoes shelflife. Good potatoes are firm, with no "eyes". I have always stored my potatoes in a cool dry (usually dark) place, but I know that putting them in the fridge is okay. Matter of prefernce I'd say.

I always keep my potatoes in the fridge. We don't eat a whole lot of potatoes and they keep much longer than out of the fridge. Even keeping them in a cool place doesn't hold a candle to the fridge. No matter where you keep them, though, they will eventually start sprouting. Once sprouted and getting mushy, they're still great for boiling or mashing. To answer your question, I'd say they keep twice as long, at least.

They will actually keep better at a cool room temp than in the fridge. They are good until they start sending out sprouts, and even then.......well, still edible but not good bakers.

I've never kept mine in the fridge. Or at least I did once and they shriveled up and turned green. So I keep them in a bin and they last about a month.
