but i am shy, i cant just walk up to him. he plays guitar. so should i ask him something about that? i dont know.

Introducing yourself is a gerat first step. There are a lot of simple, but good conversation starters. Ask him about his guitar, how long he's played, what kind of music. Ask about what he thought of an exam, teacher, or homework assignment, etc. your inital conversation doesn't have to be super-deep or anything. All you need is a simple conversation to see if he's an okay guy, and likewise.

it's a good move you know to ask about his guitar for example say that you like the music he plays, and that you're interested in music.
the best thing is to try and make up anything in order to start a conversation, maybe he's in the same class as you are? try asking him something about a subject or something, try to know which one he's good at, i think guys like it when they are sought for such purpose.... good luck!!!
