I really wanna feel more confident and know that if I had to fight someone I could really do a number on them. Does anyone know the best type of martial arts for that?

I really wanna be able to defend myself against ANYONE. No matter how big they are.

I wanna be able to stun people, hit pressure points in the body to leave them breathless, inflict pain, defend myself, and take them down. Especially in street fights seeing as how thats the only people I'd be fighting against.

Oh, and use someone's strength against them.

Kick boxing is a great exercise that would bring up your energy level teach some self defense and self confidence. I've been in kick boxing for a few years and I absolutely love it. Its great for anyone for competition or just a great cardio vascular exercise

ANY Martial Art can do this, what really matters is how well you train, because basically they all share the same principles and techniques. they All have their own strengths and weaknesses due to the different ways that they approach the aspects of fighting.

There isn't a "best" Martial Art that can help you defend yourself. it all really comes down to the individual and their training ethic.

and fighting strength with strength is never really a good idea, because physically everyone's different, some are just naturally stronger than others.

The only thing that I can tell you is to research the schools that are local to you and find out which Martial Art is right for YOU, no one can tell you about which one is going to be best for you to study.

If you can find at least three schools that interest you and watch the classes from each individual school to see which one interests you the most out of the three.

you'll then want to find out if the school you've chosen has trial classes for you to make a further decision if the school and Martial Arts discipline is right for you.

A good well rounded style would be freestyle Karate. You will learn stand up,ground, grappling and weapons. What a lot of people don't understand is that freestyle Karate is about practical street defence not who can kick the highest or punch a pad the hardest. It's definitely not a sport martial art like TKD or BJJ.The motto of my style is the best of everything in progression.Basically that means we don't care where the technique comes from we improve it and integrate it into our style while still maintaining tradition as do most freestyle Karate's.
The hardest thing is finding a good experienced instructor.I would recommend Bushi Kai or Zen Do Kai, but if your not in Australia or New Zealand you may have some difficulty finding some one who teaches these styles. These styles also usually have separate classes available to everyone in Muay Thai and BJJ/Submission/Shoot wrestling. If you can't find one of these i would suggest Kempo or Enshin or another freestyle Karate.
EDIT>to you bsjj morons-just because you have no brain and have been brainwashed you shouldn't be trying to brainwash other ppl.bsjj is a good style but is not good street defence.especially for a female.yeh on the ground on your back when some one wants to rape you.yeh real smart.good advice guys?

Those are both sport answers to a question that is not a sport.

Self Defense is different than a sport. Muay Thai is a ring fighting art. It takes a lot of time and a lot of dedication. Try living in Thailand and fighting--you will see how hard it really is. IS it great--yes and no. Yes for it´s power and what you have to give to it. No if you want to protect yourself against grabs, take downs and grappling.

What has been called the world´s best defense is Comhrac Bas--and evolution from JKD. Try it out. You have nothing to lose. Maybe the life you save will be one of your loved ones.

Any martial paintings would prepare you self assurance yet few will easily prepare you to shield your self. Sounds undesirable i understand yet many gyms are in it for the money, after all martial arts is a organization. in case you do not suggestions blending it up and prefer to be prepared for a authentic existence difficulty then i'd advise Krav Maga. It grow to be designed for the IDF (Israeli protection Forces) initially yet grow to be then delivered to the regular public with the perfect that anybody must be in a position to shield themselves. It makes use of concepts which will be used through anybody from a 10 3 hundred and sixty 5 days previous to someone who's seen geriatric. do not difficulty about self assurance. which will come as you initiate to experience smooth with each and each and every technique you learn. i'm hoping this helps you... solid success on your decision.

LaLa I don't know you personally and I don't want to stereotype women but, as a woman you have to consider some things when choosing a martial art to study. The most important thing is that if you're attacked by a man, or a woman who is larger and stronger than you, you need to be able to use what you know and not rely on brute force to take them down. The best art to study is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Search Wikipedia for brazilian Jiu-jitsu. Believe me ANYONE with Jiu-Jitsu experience has an advantage over some one without any in a street fight. Hope that helps.

If you want use someone's strength against them then aikido is the way to go. Other than that any tradtitional martial art is fine. You just know how to use it in a street fight. You also need a good teacher.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu!
BJJ is proven to be the most effective form of self-defense. it uses leverage and technique rather than relying on physical attributes (size and brute strength) to be able to subdue a much larger attacker. it's sole purpose is for a much smaller opponent to defend against a much larger and stronger opponent.

the other i would suggest would be Krav Maga...or both! I would suggest not sticking with one sole martial art though, any other art will enhance your BJJ. Muay Thai is complementary as well.

Best of luck to you!

Hi Lala,

All martial arts styles are "sport based" meaning they will do nothing for you when it comes to defending yourself against real world violence. Here's why. 1st it takes to long to learn a martial art. 2nd martail arts does not take into account variables such as environment i.e. lets say you have to protect yourself in a confined room full of furniture most martial arts techniques can not be executed in spaces like this because most techniques need alot of room to have successful execution of a tactic. 3rd martial arts or mixed martial arts is a sport ever see someone bite or stab an eye or use there environment as a weapon to protect themselves in a match...no why because martail arts has rules and the streets don't.

If you are looking for a good self defense program to take there are very view out there. The ones that are good are simple because the more complicated the techniques are the harder it is to remember due to adrenaline. Also the brain takes time deciding which technique to use when in a threatening situation this causes a detailed reaction time, which in turn could mean the difference between life and death for you.

If you need further information email me

A teacher once told me that if I could truly master just two kicks, I would be better off than know "all" kicks and do them imperfectly. Train whichever art you prefer, but master few punches and kicks and be 100% sure of each time u use them. In contests, I always used a front round-house and a back-kick to such effect that each time they were released they were most likely knock-out kicks. Call a punch or a kick whichever name yu prefer, bt they remain jst that, a punch and a kick. MA is MA.
